Any idea what this could be ?
So tonight I noticed that Professor Lumps the cancer mouse has an odd issue... His penis seems to be completely outside his body, not retracted and held close to the body like it should be and has been that way all night (possibly longer but I just noticed since he was more active today). He seems to have no trouble urinating and the tissue seems normal looking. He's doing better otherwise and has already put on a noticeable amount of weight in just a couple of days and his stool has gone from unhealthily runny to firm and much healthier looking, but this just seems weird.
Anyone have an idea what is going on?

Sounds like a prolapse.... It's very painful even though they'll hide that fact, of course. He needs to see a vet ASAP to correct the issue—of course, there's no guarantee it won't happen again.

Yeah, sounds like a prolapse. Poor guy can't catch a break. It's very painful. The tissue can dehydrate, he will have painful urination, it can become inflamed, and the circulation can get cut off. Sometimes it can be pushed back in at the vet but sometimes it requires euthanasia.
I found an older post with a picture of a prolapse. Does it look anything like this?

Crap that's what I was afraid of... Unfortunately both the places I could get him treated are closed till tomorrow morning. However I've started treating the prolapse with honey water; how intestinal prolapse is usually treated in frogs. The prolapse has already shrunk noticeably so hopefully this will provide him some relief.

Well unfortunately poor Professor Lumps just had a seizure and died cuddling up to my hand. At least his last couple of days he had attention and had regained some weight. I had hoped he'd have a bit more time but at least this end was a fairly quick one.

Thanks. Even though I know logically there was nothing I could have done differently I'm still struggling with not feeling guilty about this...

It was so good of you to take him in... I'm sorry you two didn't get more time together.

You should feel anything but guilty. You gave a dying animal a lovely, comfortable home, for the last days of his life, and cared for him til the very end. You gave the little guy as happy an ending as possible. May he rest in peace

Re: Any idea what this could be ?
Oh, I'm so, so sorry. I can relate to the guilty feelings for sure. It always feels like there should have been more we could do for them. But you gave him a nice place to stay, some good food, and most importantly, companionship when it mattered most. I'm certain that it was a great comfort to him that he was not alone when he died. I'm sorry for your heartache though. But I know you well enough to know that you would gladly do it again. You did a great kindness for that little mouse.

Thanks for your kind words, everyone... I think I will break down that setup and keep it free for other similar cases that pop up.
