Can I keep baby females with their momma after weaning ?

Post by Jaime Lynn on Tue 22 May 2018, 10:24 am

Hello all Smile I rescued a baby deer mouse a few days ago that my dog (gently) brought in lol. Instead of going the feed every 2 hours route I bought a nursing momma (with 3 babies) everyone’s doing great! Today the baby fancy mice opened eyes but baby deer mouse has not yet. I know I need to separate in a few weeks so trying to see how many cages to get. Am I able to keep the females with their mom and keep all males separate? Thanks so much! Smile

Welcome!!!
Yes, the mom and the baby girls can stay together.
The males, when ready, will need to live by themselves, each male in their own separate cage. So nice of you to get the momma and nursing babies so that the deer mouse can nurse too. Very good idea!!! Glad to hear everyone is doing good! Would love to see photos when you have a chance Very Happy

Hello thanks that’s what I was thinking! Haven’t been able to find any info about mom and girls just that the babies needs to be separated at weaning etc. also a lot of mixed info on males some say litter mates that haven’t been separated are ok but was going to separate just to make sure! Lol. Now just to be abket to figure out who’s who! I tried to send pics but it’s not letting me? I will try another way later Smile thanks so much for your response! Have good day

With males, even littermates that have never been separated, once they reach maturity it's just too risky as they are territorial and will fight, sometimes to the death. In the wild, once the male babies are old enough, they are chased away to start their own lives separately. Males love their humans though Very Happy My Mickey was a true sweetheart Love

Yes, next step is determining who is male and who is female Very Happy Maybe you will luck out and just one of the babies will be male, then you would only need one other cage/tank Very Happy

I do hope you are able to upload some photos, can't wait to see the momma and all the babies!

Have a great day!

Right now I have a total of 4 cages so worst case I can keep everyone separate until it’s obvious who’s male n female lol. Baby deer mouse will be set free where he belongs in about 2 weeks. Just opened his eyes toDay! Smile

They are all adorable!!! Thanks for sharing the photos Very Happy Have you named the momma yet? That's good you will set the deer mouse free when he is ready. What a wonderful thing you are doing to save him and give him a great start at life. That's good you have extra cages. Hopefully you will be able to tell who is male and who is female soon so you won't have to remove the females from momma. If you need help determining the sex of the babies, there are members here who can help with that with photos. So the best/easiest way to get the all telling photos is to put the mouse in a glass pitcher or something similar, preferably something tall so the mouse doesn't try to jump out, and take a photo from underneath so members can help determine males from females Very Happy
