New mouse owner :)

Post by christianrichard21 on Wed 23 May 2018, 12:18 pm

Sooo, I've been doing a lot of reading on how to care for mice and I think (hopefully) I'm finally ready. The only thing I can't get a straight answer on is how many females a 75 gallon (48inL x 18.35W) aquarium could comfortably fit without causing unnecessary stress. Thanks in advanced. I'm already loving being a part of this community. Smile

Hello! It is so nice to have you here, Christian! Very Happy
Caring for mice isn't complicated...but kudos for doing lots of research! That's always one of the best options you can do before getting a new pet you've never had before. =)
Hmm, that's an awfully big tank...which is perfectly fine! More space is usually better. :-) So, you can fit a lotta' mice in that tank, but I'll just throw out a number: I'd say no more than six. Five might be better? If there's more than six, I've heard they might make their own colony, and that might possibly cause stress if there's two different 'colonies' living in one enclosure. So, that's my input. Razz Have fun picking out your mice!!

Thank you so much! I was think somewhere along the lines of 4-6. Would you be able to recommend a bedding too? Most people seem to really like carefresh, do mice do well on it?

Welcome!!! Great job on doing your research, you are off to a good start  Very Happy  Yes, as Blessed mentioned, the colony could split into two colonies if you get too many mice, especially being new to keeping mice. So I would start out with either 3 mice or 5 mice. Just a thought, you may want to start them out in something smaller than a 75 gallon tank just till they are tame. Then you could move them to the bigger tank. And be sure to fill the 75 gallon tank with lots and lots of stuff so there aren't big open spaces. Mice are prey animals and can get nervous and scared in large open spaces. So lots of stuff to hide in and climb on. Looking forward to seeing photos when you bring home your new girls!!!

As far as bedding, I like paper based bedding and I personally use Carefresh and like it. My mouse, Mickey, recently passed away, he was a little over two years old. He was such a sweet boy. I used Carefresh for him and I still currently use it for my two hamsters.

If I might ask, my friend says mice love PVC pipe, what would be a good size to use for them? I had success with 3 inch with my robo dwarf, he really loved the tunnels and he even nested in it for a short time. I've already started buying huts and stuff like that. Thanks again Smile

Yes, Carefresh is a nice bedding that's very safe for them. Thumbs Up I used that kind of paper bedding before, when my male mouse was new, and it worked fine. I now use Kaytee Soft Granules for my females, and while at first it worked for odor control---oh, and I really like how absorbent it is!---it doesn't seem to control odor now. Sad So try out different beddings if you want, and see which one(s) work best for you. Smile The only three you should really stay away from--for your mice's health/well-being--is the cedar, pine, and aspen wood shavings. Those can probably give your mice respiratory infections, and possibly cancer...plus, they might carry lice or mites, and that's just gross. =P

Hmm, I've never used PVC pipe...for a tunnel, I just use empty toilet paper rolls, which works great, as they also like to chew on them...but I'm sure they'll like those pipes, too! Also, I'm not sure what sizes in diameter they come in, but I'm sure three inches will be just fine! It should be pretty spacious, too. Very Happy Or you could even go smaller.

If you have any other questions, concerns, or just have your own input to share, feel free to make a different thread, if you want to. Just make yourself at home here and post away! Good vibes
