Help For New Mouse Mom!

Post by AmyLynn on Sat 30 Jun 2018, 11:44 am

So, I wish I would have read more about purchasing mice before I got my 3 fancy mice from PetCo. I purchase 2 female mice Pepper and Princess Fluffles. They were happy and get along very well but we read that getting a 3rd was optimal.

4 days latter we picked up their litter mate Ruby who we were eyeing up before. The 3 seem to get along well. They often sleep in their little wicker house together. The only arguments over the last 2 weeks has been over the mouse wheel and no one was hurt. (We did order a 2nd wheel)

We have now noticed that Ruby is pregnant we got her 20 days ago now. Does she need to be separated from her litter mates? There was some sites that say yes and other that say no.

In addition I have concerns as to if Pepper was properly sexed. Shocked I attempted to search online and found that the images for males and female mice did not match Pepper...I do not know what to do? There is no vet in our area that are comfortable sexing mice until Tuesdays (I called around) and then only for an emergency appointment that would cost $120 to see one mouse that is well. A well appointment would not be available for over a week. So I called the pet store they said that they can take a look a Pepper and help get her properly sexed. They apologized and advised they were sexed by the breeder. However I do not know if I can trust them. Is there someone out there that could help me if I provide so photos?

I am super concerned about my mice. They hate being apart but I do not want anyone to get hurt...can someone offer some suggestions to this new mouse mom (soon to be grandma mouse mom)!

Some people do leave a “nanny” with their mama mice, but it’s risky — especially with your girls being from untracked pet store lines. I would move the mama mouse to her own nursery tank. There is a lot more info on caring for pregnant/nursing mice and babies here: https://www.petmousefanciers.com/t43-breeding-packet.

If you can share clear pics of the mouse in question’s genitals, someone should be able to help you sex him/her. Separate until you’re sure she is female. If male, he’ll need his own separate housing.

Ok so I ran to the pet store after work today and got a 10 gallon aquarium with all the fixings....wheel, water bottle, food bowl, and some activities for in the new cage. I put Ruby my pregnant mouse in there with her extreamly loving sister Fluffles. I have been watching and she is helping ruby. She was brining her food and helping her build a nest in a sandwich bag box that I provided. Pepper for now is in the old cage next to them until I can figure out the correct gender. How do I post pictures?

Here’s a thread that explains how to post pictures: https://www.petmousefanciers.com/t956-how-to-post-pictures-with-servimg.

Update on Ruby....I woke up and went up stair to check on the mice and I stopped before I hit the door way that they are in. I can hear baby mouse squeaking. I walked away and will let's you all know what I see when I refill the food and water latter in the day. They must have been born alive though....Very Happy

Mom and Nanny have both been spotted and look good. You can still hear the babies if you are upstairs every now and again...so all looks good.

No doubt that is a male mouse that you've posted photos of. The testes are obvious.
