Is my mouse pregnant?

Post by Zac8307 on Wed 15 Aug 2018, 9:42 am

Hi everyone! A few months ago I bought a pregnant mouse, she had 9 beautiful babies, but I kept the really cute ones and I left them with mom longer than I should've, my mistake.. 2 male babies were left with mom for 6 weeks or so and then I realized they can inbreed so I immediately separated them and now the mother seems to be getting round again, I weighed her on the kitchen scale 3 days ago, she was 54 grams, today she is 60 grams. That makes me think shes quickly gaining weight but also their wheel broke last week and I was going to get another one but we had really bad weather so maybe she's just gaining weight?? I don't know but if someone here could visually tell if shes pregnant let me know please, I'll attach images

So gestation for fancy mice is normally 19-23 days. When a mouse get pregnant again immediately after a 2nd litter and can be a little longer...I have seen up-to 28 days quoted.

How long ago did you separate the boys?

Chances are she is preggo with the males being kept with her that long. She certainly looks it in the first pic in the second post but she also looks to be a chubby girl too. Male babies should be separated at 4 weeks to be extra safe in preventing another pregnancy.

More info here: Breeding Packet.

So would you say the scale method is accurate at determining if a mouse is pregnant because this morning she was 60 grams but tonight she's 58.. I'm so utterly confused, and yes she got chubby after her first pregnancy but lately this week she's been getting much bigger at the low mid stomach so it makes me think that she is but at the same time I'm thinking she couldn't be pregnant if she lost 2 grams today, (still she gained 4 grams these past 3 days) I guess I'll give her a weigh tomorrow and btw! Her mood has changed also, she but me hard yesterday when I tried to take her out of her nest, I won't be doing that again...

I'm afraid there is no clear cut answer. The scale method isn't the most reliable way to tell if a doe is pregnant - I've had a doe gain nothing and produce babies while I've also had another doe gain 15g or so and not be pregnant.
Weight loss also doesn't rule out pregnancy I'm afraid.

One thing to keep in mind though, she's a brindle and they are INCREDIBLY prone to obesity and weight gain..

Okay so I'm still not sure, I've also been checking to see if she's gone in heat at all and she hasn't for this whole week, I will keep the forum updated on if she has more babies, I should be able to tell within a few days to a week. If any of you think she's pregnant or not let me know in this forum thanks for all your help!!!

Hello again! Today she's gained more grams and looks a little bigger, she's 61g now, so I'm pretty excited for more babies, it sucks not knowing for sure if she's pregnant or not

she ended up weiging at 71 grams and she gave birth last night, i can see her babies underneath the cage but im not going to disturb them for 3 days, i counted around 10 or 11 but there could easily be more because some were covered by the newspaper
