mouse bedding

Post by wolf89 on Sun 19 Aug 2018, 5:40 pm

Can I use horse bedding for mice? It's really cheap and last long. I would mix it with corn cob bedding to reduce smell as well as put a layer of baking soda below the bedding. This will be my first time having mice, so please correct anything I do wrong. (I don't have them yet)

Please don't use baking soda, it's not safe for mice! I don't know about horse bedding- what exactly is it/what is it made of?

And while it's technically possible for a mouse to chew through a Sterilite tub, I can say that all my mice are housed in modified Sterilite bins without an issue! There's info on how to make bin cages in the housing thread, and I'd be happy to give you advice/help myself, as I consider myself pretty good at making them. Smile

Hay or straw is safe, though has a greater risk of carrying parasites. But mice do like to chew on it and nest with it.

If your talking about the horse stall pellet bedding, its usually made from kiln- dried pine.
I do give my mice hay to build nest in.
Corn cob can be used, but if you have a leaky water bottle, you can end up with moldy bedding.
I use modified sterlite tubs to house mine in with no issues.
