Asthma atacks?
Mopsie my 8 months old matriarch mouse sometimes has a very strange atack after she wakes up from a long sleep. During this atack she began sneezing softly and this is building up to the point she is sneezing excessively, clicking, panting, squealing, hiccup, constantely and she runs around frightned whilst having all of these symptoms one after another and even at the same time. Sometimes she stands still and does’ nt breath at all, and after that very heavely. I thought many times that she was going to die. When i pick her up during the atack and place her in a different tank, the atack disappears completely within minutes and stays away when i put her back with the others. Un till the next atack there are non of these symptoms at all. Sometimes she has atacks 3 days after each other and sometimes she has non for many weeks.
It looks like something is stuck in her nose, wich is developed during her sleep? I don’t know why it happens. It occur in different settings, after she slept in paper, cottonfiber, with or without other mice... i can not pin point an external factor.
Does somebody knows what this is? Is it asthma? and what on earth could be the trigger?

Re: Asthma atacks?
First, I would suggest making an appointment with your vet. Mice have very sensitive little lungs and there are many things that can cause breathing problems. Some of them more serious than others. For instance, I have a mouse that is allergic to corn.
Things you can try while waiting for a vet visit.
What are you feeding your mouse?
- There is possibility they are allergic to one of the food items. If it is a mix of food and there are several mice there is the possibility that there is something in the mix that they are not getting often but then occasionally eating. You can start by removing frequent allergy causers like corn, wheat, and peanuts. Or speaking with your vet about a more limited diet and then add things back one at a time to insure there are no problems.
What kind of bedding do you use?
- Dusty bedding or certain types of wood chips can cause you mouse breathing problems. you could use paper shredded paper bedding to eliminate potential issues.
--> Info on bedding types https://www.petmousefanciers.com/t36-cleaning-odor-and-bedding?highlight=Bedding
Is there something else that is in the tank that they could be allergic too?
- This could include a certain type of wood toy or house or an item that may not have pet safe glue or paint on it.
What do you clean your habitat and hands with?
- Do not clean with harsh chemicals and avoid any kind of fragrance. (This includes what you might put on your own hands before you hold your mice.)
If could also just be something in the air. If that is the case an air filter may help if you run it in the room your mouse is in.

Re: Asthma atacks?
Hi Amylynn,
Thank you very much for the answer! I excluded several posibilitys since the attacks appeared with all types of food and even environment. Example: she got one after sleeping in a tank of glass and also in the tank of painted wood. I uses waterbased acrylic paints, wich i asked my vet before use. Though in both environments she hasn’t got any atack at all. So i assume it has nothing to do with the tank?
I tried also different materials for her to sleep on and excluded them on the same way.
I have red the information about beddings and i’m currently using ‘ hemp’
But i recently discovered there are different types of hemp on the marked. I use a different type of hemp at the moment and since i have being using this; mopsie never had an attack.
The hemp i first used is for horses ans is being sold as non dusty bedding, but i noticed many tiny fibers and dust in the air when using it.
The hemp i using currently has non fibers or dust at all.
About visiting my vet: when i can’t find what causes it i will visit a vet, but if mopsie has no synptoms besides those attacks, my vet can’t see anything out of the ordinary. Last month i went to different vets 4 times and i asked for the medicines because they don’t know and one time: the vet refused to inspect her because it was too difficult and the mouse was movibg too much. Another time: the vet told me that he difn’t even know how petmice look like. And when i call for advise they always tell me they don’t know. So i try to figure out the most problems myselfe and when i know the cause and need threadment: i call a vet and ask for the medicines i need.
So it could be an allergic reaction to the bedding, could’nt it? When she gets another atack whilst using this bedding i will try other possibilities you gave me. Thanks again!

Re: Asthma atacks?
I am sorry to hear that you are having such trouble finding a good vet. That must be so frustrating. If these ideas do not resolve the issue just post again and I am sure people will continue to try to brains storm. Good luck with Mopsie.

Re: Asthma atacks?
Hi Amy Linn,
Thanks for asking! Fortunatelty Mopsie has had no asthma atacks at all, not even a single sneeze, so it was likely the hemp brand. Thanks for your help!
