Injured Paw?

Post by Cyanidealist on Sun 30 Sep 2018, 3:29 am

So, this is the second day I've had my mouse. I carried him carefully home and placed him in his tank with the items I'd bought him, and I watched him sniff around curiously for a bit. I took some non-intrusive pictures, blurry, and in this case unhelpful, and then I left to run some errands. I was pretty satisfied with his state when I left, and I made sure he wasn't shivering or cowering.

After a lot of life complications, I came back today and my mouse seemed to have hurt his paw. I don't know if this was how he had been before and I didn't notice it, or if he just did it in the time I was gone at work. I just know that now he seems to be walking on what appears to either be a broken or injured paw! It is a little limp, but it doesn't look like it pains him. Despite having learned you're not supposed to bother mice for about a week so they can adapt, I gained his curious trust enough to have him crawl onto my hand so I could try to take better pictures. It didn't work, so I let him roam then put him back in his tank.

I'll upload photos when I'm not about to pass out, and try to get some better images without directly bothering him. But I'm confused, and concerned. I watched him for a while today when I saw him like that, and he doesn't seem to really mind the paw. He continues to walk around on it even though it's limp, so I don't think it hurts, but I just don't know. I want to give him the best.

Otherwise, he seems like a very fun mouse! He's active, curious, and sweet. He even uses his mouse wheel as a sort of climbable ride, choosing to cling to the outside as a way to gently but surely lower himself to the soft bed of his tank. i'm thinking maybe he fell off the ladder (which I've since laid more flat) or poorly executed his exit technique from the outside of the mouse wheel.

TL;DR

My mouse seems to have injured his paw to where it barely, if at all, moves. But he doesn't seem to mind it. He even cleans himself with both paws like it's nothing, and walks on it like it doesn't hurt! Is it going to be all right? Should I do something?

Mousies are pretty good at working their way through structural injuries, so this may clear up on its own.

If you have a 10x magnifying lens, try to get a better look at the injured area. Maybe transfer mousie into a small, clear container so you can look up from underneath. Even wait until he falls asleep so he won't be moving all over the place. You would want to check for nail damage, any obvious cuts or bruises or swellings, any difference in structural appearance from the opposite-side foot, and any spot that is redder than the rest of the skin on that foot or the opposite-side foot (which could indicate infection, and that can be fast trouble for such a small thing as a mouse).

Check again after two or three hours. Then check again after another two or three hours. If mousie is improving, you can space out your observation sessions longer.

Keep track of your observations, so just in case you have to take mousie to the doctor, you will be able to tell the folks there exactly what you saw and when you started seeing it. Maybe (and we hope probably) everything will be just fine and dandy, but if medical care becomes necessary you won't be able to travel back in time to recreate the sequence of events.

Luck!

Thank you so much for your advice! I bought some stuff to take notes, but I'm not sure if it's really a problem. I've been watching him, and at this point, I'm convinced that he was born with a disability and has learned to live with it. He gets around so well, as well as a mouse could with a disabled paw. He isn't biting it, chewing it, or really bothered by it at all. I continue to observe, but so far I think it's a birth defect. We'll see, nothing is going wrong so far, which I'm glad of.

Thank you again! This is good information for future reference, too. Smile
