DIY cage coating?

Post by Beachhouse2000 on Fri 05 Oct 2018, 4:12 pm

Hi!
i'm building a DIY cage for my hamster and i want it to be good for mice too, do i have to coat the wood in anything? i know that mice can chew though wood, does anybody know of a cheaper option then acrylic sheets (they're like $200 at homedepot and that wouldn't even cover the cage!)

Any child/pet safe, water-based wood sealant would be perfectly safe once completely dry.  Just read the label.  You definitely want to seal the wood, otherwise it’ll just soak up urine. One brand that’s mentioned a lot is Plastikote (brush on, not spray) but it can be expensive depending on where you’re from.
