Help! Need advice

Post by katieomms on Fri 12 Oct 2018, 9:39 pm

I currently live in an apartment with 3 other roommates. I have 5 female mice in a wire cage that I’ve had for a year. I really like the little buddies but my roommates HATE them because they smell bad no matter what I do. I clean the cage every other day completely and I use odor resistant bedding. I also use this urine deodorizer for small animals that you put in their water. No matter what I do, nothing works and my roommates still complain. They said I have a week to figure it out or I have to get rid of the mice. I don’t want to have to give them away because they’ve been such a joy to have as a pet. What can I do? Any tips to keep smell contained? Can I keep them outside? I live right next to a creek so I worry about predators and squirrels breaking into the cage if they are kept outside. Please help!

Have you tried running an air purifier in the room they’re in? I’ve seen several people say it really helps.

I will add that it needs to be, I think a charcoal air purifier? Because I have one that isn't charcoal, and it does nothing. It might help keep the air clean of debris for the mice to prevent respiratory illness, but it does nothing for smell.

It's strange that five girls would be making too much stink. You have been given an awfully short time to fix the problem, so maybe you should negotiate for an extra week or two, as long as you are making efforts to reduce the objectionable smell.

It is possible that you are overcleaning. If you just concentrate on removing soiled bedding each time, let them keep most of it that smells like their sweet little selves, and add some fresh, maybe they will adjust to that and stop overstinkifying the place.

I would consider myself incredibly fortunate to have a roommate with mousies! Or ANY pets! No matter WHAT the smell! That's just me speaking for myself (and from personal experiences), but it does bring up another possible aspect of this problem: That maybe it isn't really the smell your apartmentmates object to -- they may actually be trying to come up with a way to lose the mice without directly telling you to lose the mice.

I had a very similar problem when I was living with housemates back at college. I had two hamsters in my bedroom, in large cages and loads of bedding. Keeping in mind, hamsters do not start to smell in an appropriate enclosures until a month or two since last clean.

I knew for a fact there could be no smell, I had an air purifier, door draft proofed and windows slightly opened at all times. I also spot cleaned every day. No way any odours would come from my room.

My housemates, however, were not very fond of the idea of having any kind of rodents in the house. They even filed a complaint to my landlord about the "odour in the gaf" !

You seem to be doing everything you possibly can to keep the smell under control. You could get a third party to come into the apartment to give an unbiased opinion. If it turns out that there in fact is no smell to be complaining about, you might just find out that your housemates were not having good intentions from the beginning and might just not want mice in the house. It's extremely unikely that with all of the efforts and precautions you took, that there would be any smell and it's very cruel to expect of you to get rid of your beloved pets.
