How to Help My Lonely Mouse
Today one of my two mice has passed away, and I read that mice feel each others pain, and do grieve over their partners/family especially if they are close. Since shes been alone ive caught her just staring off into nothing, with the saddest look in her eyes. My two mice have been together all their life, which has been 1year and 8months.
They have never been easy to handle: they bite my hands thinking it could be food, they are skittish, and always try to run away if I hold them. The only times ive been able to handle them have been when they have been sick.
Im afraid she wont be as active, and might just die from being sad or depressed.
My question is, how can I make the rest of my one mouses life better now that shes so alone? Especially given that they have never really bonded with me/ are afraid of me.
Many thanks for any advice

Re: How to Help My Lonely Mouse
Hello! With most female mice, the best thing you can do is bond them with another mouse/another group. Females thrive on being social with other mice! If this isn’t an option for you though, you could try hand taking her again (for nippy mice I just wear gloves). It might end up being a slower process but if you can bond her with another mouse then it’s crucial for her to have 30+ minutes of handling a day. I hope this helped! Good luck!

Re: How to Help My Lonely Mouse
The best thing to do (usually) is introduce her to a couple more female mice, once they’ve gotten through quarantine of course. But I know this isn’t always possible depending on your situation. If introducing new friends isn’t a possibility for you, it’s usually recommended to interact with her as often as you can (a couple times a day if possible) and make sure to keep her busy by changing up toys often, moving things around daily, offering new types of toys/chews/treats, scatter feeding, treat puzzles, etc. If frequent handling causes her more stress than help, just stick with keeping her plenty busy with new or rearranged toys and puzzles. Getting her out to a safe play area daily can usually still be managed with skittish mice by gently transferring them over in a box/hide/tube, so they still get that much needed out-of-tank play time. Be sure to keep both the play area and her tank jam packed full of things to hide and play in.
