Thinking about getting pet mice
We are planning to get a small pet for our 9yo. Mice are at the top of our list. We had some years ago before she was born.
She has been doing LOTS of research, and I joined the forum to learn more.
We have two dogs and two fish tanks, but this new addition will be her special pet.
Actually petS as two female mice are our current plan!

Welcome to the forum
I would have LOVED mice as a kid
One fun thing about mice for kids (or 28 year olds like me), is that you can make things for the mouse, like popsicle stick houses, climbing frames, bridges etc. In my opinion, the more toys/activities you give a mouse, the more fun you have with them! So start collecting cardboard toilet paper tubes

Yes! She is already collecting toilet paper rolls and constructing willow balls & ladders.
I hadn't considered Popsicle stick houses. Would you glue them with hot glue or some other kind of glue? Or notch them so there is no glue involved? One more thing to research!

Lots of us use hot glue guns. The glue is non-toxic. Obviously you still wouldn't want a mouse to ingest loads of it, so if you did have a mouse that was eating loads of the glue, you might want to remove it. But none of my mice have been that interested in the glue, they might chew it a bit to test what it is, but they'd much rather chew on the wood, so hot glue has been fine for us.
Obviously a 9 year old might need help with a hot glue gun, so if you don't want to use one you can also use other non-toxic glue that's safe for kids, like PVA glue (I think American's call it Elmer's glue?). The only thing is that it takes much much longer to dry than hot glue, so you can't make things as fast (I'm too impatient for that haha).
The forum has two threads that you might enjoy looking at (if you haven't seen them already): totally free toy ideas (link) and popsicle stick toys (link)
Edit: You may also find it helpful to know that mouse-safe strings are usually anything made from sisal, jute or hemp

It took me foreeeever to get on the hot glue wagon, I hurt myself enough without adding the possibility of burning myself.
Non toxic, crafty wood glue is a good in between between Elmer’s and hot glue.

I love my hot glue gun, but I must admit I've burned myself quite a few times making mouse stuff

Funnily enough I was looking at some non-toxic wood glue the other day and wondered if it was mouse-safe

So exciting! Mice make wonderful pets! I actually would recommend a trio of females for first time mouse owners. There is much less of a risk of fighting/bullying and it just works out really easily. I definitely agree with the collecting cardboard products and non toxic hot glue mentioned above! Mice get bored so fast, diy toys will become your best friend

I tried to figure out multi-quote without success.
Thanks for the popsicle stick toy links, Mouselover! The kids have been busy creating stuff to for our future pet(s)! They made a shed, a house, and a Númenorean boat wrecked in the Downfall (any LotR fans?).
Also, thanks for the recommendation of 3 females, Animallover562! We found a single male at the animal shelter in the city, but haven't been able to get there yet. I told my daughter if the little male is meant to be her mouse he won't be adopted when we can go, and if he is...he'll still be there!
