Re: Weird breathing?
That doesn't look good. It's really hard to see, but that looks like labored breathing. Is she making any noises? Was she doing it when you first brought her home? I'll be up for a little while, I'll check back.
It could be nerves. Mice can get really stressed out in a new environment. If it just started and she isn't making noises... I would lean toward nerves.

Re: Weird breathing?
She's really skinny, so I kinda doubt that, I actually commented on how light she was earlier. I was thinking it could be nervousness or shock, but I wasn't sure. I noticed it a little when I brought her home but I wasn't really paying attention to it. Every time I go in the room she's in the same place as well, she doesn't really move much. Even when I put different toys in her cage to entertain her. Could she just be scared and shocked?
Re: Weird breathing?
she could be in shock. but in my experience, it's very unusual for a new mouse to just sit in the same spot out in the open like that. if they are scared, usually they will go hide. poor little thing. does she have a nice hideaway? i would probably stick my hand in there and see if she feels cool to the touch. it's unusual behavior for sure. all my new mice either hide or eat and run around.
did she seem okay at the pet store, running around and stuff? there isn't much that can be done tonight, other than to make sure she's warm and has food/water.

Re: Weird breathing?
She does have a hide but I can't even get her to go in it. At the pet store she was sleeping in a hide, and when the employee lifted up the hide she ran and hid under the saucer wheel. Then of course she lifted up the saucer wheel and got her. But anyway, I bothered her a little right now and got her to go to the food bowl, where she ate a few seeds. Here's a GIF of her at the food bowl...

Re: Weird breathing?
aw, poor little lady! yeah, that is some rough breathing. but her eyes are bright and her ears are perked up, so she doesn't appear to be in any discomfort. it could be stress. she should hopefully be sleeping when you check on her in the morning, check her breathing then. if its stress, she should be breathing better while asleep. any you try to get some sleep too!

Re: Weird breathing?
Thanks - I found her sleeping this morning and she wasn't breathing hard during sleep - so she was probably just stressed. Glad she's ok now!
Re: Weird breathing?
I'm so glad! All my sick mice always breath rough when their sleeping, so if she looked comfy sleeping... that's good

Re: Weird breathing?
She's up again - still breathing like that. Maybe she just needs some time to herself so she can work things out - I'll leave her alone for now.
Re: Weird breathing?
That'd be a good idea. Give her a few days to settle in, only going in to change her food and water and clean up if need be. She should perk up in a few days. Best of luck with your new girl!

Re: Weird breathing?
Poor little lady. Is she still just sitting there or is she eating/drinking and exploring?

Re: Weird breathing?
Haven't seen or heard her drink yet, which doesn't seem good. She instantly went to the food bowl the moment I let her in her cage, and she's eaten a few seeds and pieces of millet. She's been staying in her hide today, that seems good. She doesn't come out unless I lift up the hide and bother her. I just put half a baby carrot, and a tiny sliver of watermelon in there, hopefully since she hasn't drank, she'll get some moisture from those.scaredymouse wrote:Poor little lady. Re: Weird breathing?
They can be really sneaky when they want to be. She's probably waiting until you aren't around to eat/drink. After one of my mice died, I didn't see her two friends for a full week. But clearly they were eating and drinking. I was finding poops all over the place, food was missing and water was going down. But they didn't want to be seen.

Re: Weird breathing?
Good idea with the watermelon and carrot. Maybe she's eating and drinking at night, when the lights are out?
