Might Be Getting a Buck
Welp, I had a sorry experience today. I find out that my local animal shelter finally had mice. I sprang out of bed, rushed over there, only to find out that they'd just been adopted out. SIGH! Well after that disappointment, I went to Petco to play with the bucks! God, their smell was awful. The combo of boy smell and pet shop funk was not a pleasant one, but the boys really enjoyed the company. They were too shy to be picked up and would jump out of my hand, but they liked sitting in it.
So since I'm now craving to get another mouse, I did a little looking around on craigslist, and I found someone a few towns over who's mouse had kids! They had six babies, so I decided to shoot them an email and ask if there are any kids left. Of course, this is craigslist, so odds are I'll get no response, but I thought it'd be good to try. I won't be getting any more new mice until Little Cow has passed on, but on the off chance this person actually does contact me, I'd like to start discussing now in case I decide I really do want a boy. I'll probably take down my fish tank to make more time for the new guy.

Awesome, I saw an adorable buck at the PetCo I went to yesterday, of course he was just a feeder, but he was looking me right in the eyes, I wanted him so bad! But I just couldn't handle a buck at the moment. I wish you the best!

I hope it'll work out for you, you'll have so much fun with a boy! Do you know how the old babies are? It'd be neat to watch them grow if they're still young.

Well, the ad said they're about two weeks old, and it was posted May 15. So by now they should be about six weeks. I'm not entirely sure about getting a buck so young when I'm about to head off to college, but I do have some options for rehoming, so I'm trying not to worry about it too much.

Get a boy mouse, they're the best!!! Of course I may be a bit biased as I refuse to have anything BUT bucks lol
The smell is actually barely noticeable with my current guy who's not as much of an alpha male type.

I agree! I think you get a stronger bond with bucks because they need more attention and friendship!
Re: Might Be Getting a Buck
I have a buck I got about two weeks ago. Hi is a cutie and acts very interested in me, very curious, but when I put my hand in there trying to make friends he tries to bite me. He didn't break the skin, but now I'm leery to put my hand in there again. Do some male mice just not want attention? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Try doing taming sessions in neutral territory outside the tank.

Thank you, that is a good idea. I will give it a try.

Re: Might Be Getting a Buck
So, update! I haven't gotten an email back yet (surprise surprise), but it's only been a couple of days, so I'm still hopeful. However, it turns out that people also post ads for mice in the community section under pets! I never knew this! I'd always just checked in the sales section. So I found a couple more options. There's a lady trying to rehome her young son's mouse, and there's a person across the sound who has a litter of self blacks and whites from the looks of the picture. No phone numbers, of course, but I sent them both emails and am hoping for a response. I used my decade old optonline email because apparently gmail blocks craigslist emails? That might be why I never really get responses.
However, there is something strange. For the lady who's rehoming her son's mouse, she wants to charge a rehoming fee of forty dollars. FORTY DOLLARS! Can y'all believe that? I can't afford that, so I'm gonna have to try and haggle with her. That is, if she even responds. And if none of these people do, then I'll just drop on by Petsmart and pick up a boy. Hoping to have a new mouse within the next two weeks!

Forty dollars to rehome a mouse is insane... Who would pay that?! Maybe they're just trying to weed out the people who would use him as a feeder? Hopefully they don't actually expect you to pay that much...

If she insists, I absolutely will not take him. If she responds, I'll present my mouse knowledge, show her the sort of tank he'll be staying in, and assure her as best I can that he'll be going to a good home. Then I'll haggle and say I'll pay a max of $10. Whether she takes my offer or not is her choice; Petsmart is still an option.

Re: Might Be Getting a Buck
That sounds like a good plan CinnamonPearl. She'd be mad not to want you as an adopter!

WE GOT A RESPONSE! SQUEEEEEE! I just got an email back from the woman who wants to rehome her son's mouse, and she still has him! I just emailed her back, and I'm currently trying to haggle my way out of her ridiculous rehoming fee. I explained how I'll care for him and offered to show her pictures of the girls' enclosure if she wants, and I offered to pay a max of $10. Hopefully she'll be into it.
