Re: Might Be Getting a Buck
Yeah, they said why they were rehoming him in the ad. The story is that she got the mouse for her nine year old son two months back, but her two year old daughter is constantly screaming and demanding to hold the mouse, pretty much throwing temper tantrums. She can't deal anymore, so she's rehoming him and she's gonna get more mice in a few years when her daughter has more chill. Not the greatest reason, but hey, I'll take it. I'd rather she rehome him than let a young toddler handle a delicate mouse. It's good, because she said he hasn't had any health problems or allergies since he's been living with them. Of course, her son named him Mr. Jingles, so that is definitely going to change.
Also, here is the tank top I ordered. I used to use them for frogs, and they work brilliantly for mice too. The locking clips are built in, and the design is very sleek. They are a bit noisy when opening the tank, and the noise frightened Mabel, Ro, and Cow their first couple of days with me, but they got used to it pretty quick.

Shoot, looks like it's made with window-type screening. My cats aren't allowed on the tanks but cats are cats and I couldn't take the risk (learned that the hard way). The built in locking clips are a neat idea though. Your girls don't try to chew the screening?

Hm, maybe I should reconsider what screens I use now that I have a kitten. But then again, he did go on top of the girls' tank once, and it held up fine. I'll leave it now until he gets older. After all, the doors are always closed.
No, they never chewed it. Window screens are chew proof, right?

I got a 40g reptile tank on sale that came with a screen lid like that. I wont use it, it feels like it could be chewed through and definitely couldn't support a cat.

Hmm... I don't know. I mean, I've been using that type of screen since I first got my girls, but I don't want anyone chewing through it. Plus with Felix around now... Okay, I'll hang onto the metal screen top I have for now, search around, and see if I can find any locking clips that fit into my desk. If I can find any, I'll return the zoomed top I just bought and switch both tanks to the metal tops. I think that's a good plan.

I think I found a good set! They're expensive, $11 for a pair, but I'm gonna give them a shot. Apparently you can set passcodes on them. Whaaaaat? They arrive Saturday, so I'll let you guys know.

Re: Might Be Getting a Buck
I always felt the material seemed easily chewed. But you have the lid on hand. I'm only going by a comment in the reviews that mentions the material. Is it screen like you'd find in a window or more heavy duty?
The hard way I learned with a screen lid, even though the cat wasn't supposed to be in that room or on the tank he managed to sneak by now and then and loved laying on the top of it. Apparently one of these times the screen ripped ever so slightly - didn't even notice until I looked very carefully after the fact - and the snake escaped. We never found him.
I make sure to get the thicker metal lids since then.

Okay, yeah, I definitely wanna get metal screen tops now. I have a cat now, and I can't risk that. My girls have never chewed the window screen, not even our resident chewer Egg, but I'm not gonna wait for them to decide to do it. I'll use the screens I have for now and switch to the metal ones once I find good locking clips.
With my room, I'm pretty much ready for any escapes. I put plastic draft blockers on the undersides of all the doors in my room. That way, if a mouse ever escaped, she wouldn't be able to leave my bedroom. It's good because a) I can locate an escapee easily, and b) my dad has very poor eyesight and could easily step on an escaped mouse. Once one of my frogs escaped, and he thought he was a waterbug and hit him with a newspaper. The frog was perfectly fine, surprisingly!
But yeah, anyway, metal tops it is. I can't wait to get those locking clips and test them out. Plus it'll be a lot easier to hang toys now. ^.^

Ooh that's a great idea with the escape proof bedroom doors
I always try to have my mouse cages on desks/tables/chests that are high and not next to any other furniture. That way if I had an escapee the only way down would be to jump off, which most mice won't do.

Okay, so I washed out the bleach from Mr. Jingle's new tank and dried it off. Question: since it was an aquarium, should I also give it a quick wash with antibacterial soap, or is the bleach fine for now?

The bleach probably did the trick.

Re: Might Be Getting a Buck
Is his name actually Mr. Jingles?
I love the Green Mile! That film makes me bawl my eyes out though

Mr. Jingles....
Well.
Any new name ideas? Is there a picture of him available yet, or?

Re: Might Be Getting a Buck

This is the only pic I've seen of him. You can see him in the corner there. I don't have any name ideas yet. I've got a few reserved, but I'd like to meet the little guy before I decide on a proper name for him. The right name always comes if I'm patient enough. And I'm quite good at names, if I do say so myself. (My sister would disagree. She hated the names Little Cow and Eglantine at the beginning. I think they're cute!

Cute, from what I can tell. I love your names! Little Cow's was one of my personal favorites - Lilith's is a close second!
