What kind of Carefresh to use / Is Kaytee bedding hypoallergenic?

Post by River on Wed Jun 29, 2016 3:43 pm

Sorry for the double question! I've been using shredded printer paper, and in time, this will become quite expensive. We don't have any newspapers of the black and white variety, either. On top of that, it's pretty time-consuming since the the shredder can only take 10 papers at a time and shreds at a painfully slow pace.

I'm leaning towards Carefresh. In the shop both girls came from, they housed the mice on Carefresh natural, I think. However, I've heard certain Carefresh types are more dusty. I've also heard that there's a certain kind of Carefresh that's hypoallergenic. Which one is the most recommended and has the least dust?

On the other hand, I've heard even better about Kaytee clean and cozy, so I love the idea of it. However, I worry it'll be bad for Mai's sensitive nose since she's never really used it before, and I'm not sure if she'll have an allergic reaction to it or not. Is there a hypoallergenic Kaytee bedding? If not, is Kaytee dusty?

I want the best for her little snoot!

Slightly bitter comment: Crittercare is very dusty 10/10 would not recommend.

I use Kaytee clean and cozy, and it's not very dusty. Just whatever you do, avoid the scented ones. They are toxic. It'll say if it's scented on the front of the bag. The unscented are completely safe and very good, though! I personally like birthday cake cause of the nice colors.

For carefresh, I'm not sure which was the non-dusty one. It's either white or natural. Someone else will know.

I think natural is slightly more dusty. Not 100% on that though.

I use Kaytee Clean and Cozy for my gerbils, and it's wonderful. Not dusty, and the birthday cake variety has wonderful colors!
As for carefresh, I'm pretty sure the non-dusty kind is natural, but I'm not 100% sure.

I use the white kaytee clean n Cozy. I find it to be less dirty than the "natural."  The colors are fine too but I have an easier time finding the white.  I haven't used carefresh since that whole baking soda thing so I'm not sure about it. But in general, paper based bedding (without baking soda or frangrance) is the safest bet where allergies are a concern. I think I'll try either white clean n cozy, or the birthcake kind - depends on what I find first. Thanks!

I know that the white clean and cozy is available at Petco. They don't have any other colors, unfortunately.

I get my birthday cake bedding from amazon. Its a little bit pricier once shipping gets added, but I really love the colors.

Allegedly Carefresh has removed the baking soda from their bedding but now all of the bags say "with proprietary odor control formula" which makes me think they're still sneaking baking soda in there. That said, I've always been a Kaytee Clean and Cozy fan (plain white), have found it to have minimal dust, no mousie respiratory issues and quite good for odor control -- that's hardly an issue now that I'm down to just Cordelia but it really mattered when I still had all five girls.

I saw that "All new odor control" and it put me off pretty easily. However Kaytee was close to 30$ for the smallest bag at that store so....needless to say, we're looking online now. Ha.

Thirty dollars for the smallest bag? Jesus! That's ridiculous. Try amazon. You can get the biggest bag for a lower price, and free shipping on prime.

I've been using Carefresh for a little while now after originally using Kaytee paper bedding, because the Carefresh went on sale for a while. It's much dustier than the Kaytee bedding, but it absorbs odor much better, and my mice seem to prefer it. However, my hamster hates it, as she can't burrow in it as easily and when she does burrow she gets covered in dust. I'm considering switching back, but I'm not sure yet.

I use Kaytee. I've been through one bag of Carefresh and it was kind of dusty. Not very, but still a little. With Clean and Cozy there is no dust, and it's so, so soft! Olimar loves it!

Definitely ordering some then. One of my girls likes to bury herself in the bedding she has already, and it's just plain shredded paper! She'd adore something softer and easier to burrow in.

I think it's just that petstore is outrageous on everything. Even Carefresh was 19.99 for the smallest bag they had in stock.
