is It ok to temporarily keep 5 females in a 20g long? ( in future)
So I’m planning on getting mice ( I don’t own any rn so don’t worry about housing), I have a detolf from my hamster that passed away a few months ago and want to get some female meese
. I kinda wanted 6 but I’m planning on getting 5 potentially. If you remember me I was more active on the form a few months ago but since I already had a hamster I wasn’t going to get mice, but now I’m kind of researching again and planning on getting some. I have a 20 gallon long with a mesh lid that is about 31” long 12 1/2 wide 13” tall which I plan on housing them while I tame them, however currently my detolf does not have a lid and since I’m currently going to school I’m worried I won’t have time to make one until summer. I already have mesh but it’ll be a little hard to get wood the right dementions. How long could I keep 5 females in a 20 gal? I’d clean everything about every week and a half or however often needed to keep it from becoming disgusting. Again it’ll be in the future so I have time, just wondering.

According to the cage calculator, a 20L would be able to house 5 mice.
You definitely want to clean at least once a week, possibly more depending on the smell. I have a 20H which according to the cage calculator can hold 4 does, but I have 3 and I still can't imagine letting the cage go longer than a week to clean it, the smell gets pretty strong. I used to have hamsters and mice just have a stronger smell than them, for sure.

A 20 gal long has a footprint of 390 square inches. Mice and humans need similar amounts of space when body size and weight are adjusted for comparison. 390 sq in for a mouse is like a 500 square foot house for a person which is about a one bedroom apartment. They are living between average american to average western european standards according to http://rmca.org/Articles/cagesize.htm . An average prison cell in mouse size is 15 square inches, so to make the tank feel like a prison you would have to put 26 mice in there. Just an interesting comparison!
