newbie help
Hi everyone!
I'm playing with the idea of getting a mouse or mice, however, I know little to nothing about their needs. I will not be impulsive which is why I want all the information before making a desicion. So basically smother me in mouse information lol
questions I have:
I have a bin cage that I don't use because I upgraded my female Syrian hamster. It's about 420-430 sq inches. Is this okay for a trio of females or a single male?
I already have Mazuri lab blocks, but I'm not sure if its a good quality for mice? I would add another food of course. tell me what you feed yours!
If I get females. what wheels do I get and would I need multiple water bottles & food dishes?
I know they like crowded cages (?) so I would put numerous cardboard boxes and other hides/chews, but I would love to hear about the do's and dont's
Thank you for much! sorry if I rambled. I just know about hamsters
I live in the United States in terms of what's around me

Re: newbie help
Welcome! Mice are so fun. Good job being responsible and not impulsive!!! I know it’s hard, and I know I made a million mistakes with my first two ladies.
I’m going to post a few links that will answer your questions plus some:
1. What are the dimensions of your cage? If it was an appropriate size for a hamster I’d bet it’s plenty of space for mice. This cage calculator will give you a better idea of the MAXIMUM number of mice you could keep in your cage.

2. This thread has some nutrition guidelines and as well as a few recommended/example seed mixes.

3. Multiple wheels and dishes are not necessary, and in the early days can sometimes cause more problems than they’d prevent. But when your mice are established and getting along, multiple of each is just fine. Link has some good wheel examples. My mice prefer a mesh wheel so they can run at the same time and do loop-de-loops.
