DIY Travel cage Empty DIY Travel cage

Post by Echoe77 Sun 14 Jul 2019, 7:03 pm

I want to test out making a bin cage and figured I would try a "travel" cage for when I take my mice to the vet.

This is the one I have now (soooo small)

Anyone have any suggestions or sizing ideas? I was thinking at least 12x12in (they will only be in it for 1/2 hr-1 hr max). Also anyone know what size bin should I use for a regular bin cage? I've been looking at sterilite and ziploc, I like that the ziploc ones are easy to stack, but that could just be my obsessiveness talking.

I was thinking of a 14.5 qt latchmate 16" x 11.10" x 7"
Recollections large craft case 17.2" x 15.2" x 6.1"
Sterilite nesting box
Ziploc weather shield box

I used to use the medium or large plastic Kritter Keeper for travel. It worked but could be better. I’ve seen great travel cages made from storage containers.  I really like the one shown around 5:20 in this video:

The Cage Calculator should give you a better idea on what size bin to go with for a permanent home.
Please keep in mind that this calculator gives the very minimum space recommended for the number of mice. You’ll likely find more space works better, depending on your mice.
