Habitrail OvO Water Bottle Issues Empty Habitrail OvO Water Bottle Issues

Post by aestheticpink on Fri 20 Dec 2019, 12:13 am

Hi! I got my new mouse, Juniper, a few days ago! For his cage, I got him a Habitrail ovo Loft (which is just a tad larger than a ten gallon tank). It came with a water bottle, which has been leaking and now i cant tell if he’s been drinking water! He used a regular water bottle at the pet store so I’m worried he doesn’t now how to use it. Should I switch to a water bowl for the time being, or trust he’s been drinking water? I would hate for him to dehydrate.

Congratulations on your new buddy!

I would give him both just to be safe.  If you can't then just the water bowl and look into a bottle guard and regular bottle to attach to the cage.  Petco's pricing is a bit better than Petsmart, especially online.  That is if you are in the states.

You sound really excited about your Habitrail OvO loft.  I've had Critter Trails, a Hamster cage from Petsmart, and a knock off Habitrail from Amazon.  I don't want to ruin all the excitement, but in my opinion, they don't really give the mouse a lot of room even with all the tubes.  Plus, the water bottles are junk and they are not really secure.  They look very cool but may not be the best form of housing for you precious new friend.

If someone else bought it for you, talk to them.  Pet stores usually take them back.  But, if you want to keep it, it won't harm him...and they are fun.  Just check on him and make sure he's where he's supposed to be.  Keep it away from curtains or anything he can grab onto through the bars.

I prefer clear plastic storage totes.  You can get a lot more room for the price.  It all depends on how much room you have to work with.

I've used Critter Trail tubes in my totes.  I secure them with heavy duty duct tape.  But, you could secure them better with something from the plumbing aisle at a local hardware store.  I find the salespeople at Ace a lot more knowledgeable than Home Depot.  They are used to people coming in with craft projects or things like this.

There is a housing calculator along the right side of this site and a sticky (an article) under the Housing section that may help too.

I have lone males and groups of females so I use a variety of totes depending on the group size and needs.  Here is a list of storage totes I’ve used or currently use as habitats for my mice…

Single or small group

Large group (or play area):

Container:

Tips:
• Use Velcro to affix water bottles.  The bottle must be empty and at room temperature when applying the Velcro or it won’t stick.
• If you don’t have a surface available to store your tote, consider a skinny folder table.  I purchased mine at Walmart originally to use as a desk.

• If you choose a different tote not listed above.  Make sure the sides are straight up and down.  Sloping sides will cause most water bottles to malfunction.  The bottles must remain straight up and down.

Good luck with Juniper!  It seems like you are going to be an awesome pet parent.  Take care.

Thank you so much! I'll definitely put a little water bowl in his cage and search for a new water bottle. The Habitrail one is such a hassle. I'm not a big fan of the habitrails either! They look so cool but they're so tiny Sad I got the OvO loft because it doesn't have an tubes, it's just open space unlike their other products. I also got it for a steal too! The OvO Loft is pretty much just a fancy-looking ten gallon tank but I am definitely going upgrade in the near future. Thanks for all the links!! Smile

Looked into that cage and it's a really neat one! Smile Might get one if I can find one for a decent price, it would be really nice as a QT / backup cage!

If you do decide to make a bin cage, feel free to message me and I'd be happy to help. (And I'm sure there are others around who would, too!)

I happened to catch it at a really low price on Amazon. I got it for either 17 or 23 dollars and right now it’s 66!! I really like it and it’s pretty spacious compared to their cages on the market right now.
