Barred cages?

Post by River on Tue 05 Jul 2016, 6:13 pm

I'm looking for something with better ventilation for Maier - since I'm pretty sure her nose is just sensitive and maybe that'd help - but I'm not sure about the safety of it....opinions? And what type of cages are suitable?

It really depends what size she is and what you have available. The best size barred spacing is 1/4 inch (between 6 an 7 mm) but for fully grown mice you'd usually be able to use something with no bigger that 3/8 inc (9mm) bar spacing.

I've used nothing but barred cages, and have had no escapees. But I don't know what's available in the U.S.A.

I used a bar cage with the pair I had in 2013, but then I had little to no knowledge about mice. They never did escape, though. I have two spare cages - one that was used for the old mice, and one that was used for my sisters chinese hamster - so it's an option. I'll have to measure both of them though. I believe the bar spacing is fine.

Shoot! I remember there was a link to a really good barred cage on the old site, but it's gotta be out of reach now. I think it was in a thread where Scaredy was asking about alternate housing for Goose, and NM linked her to it. Maybe someone still has it and could provide?

I don't remember the name of it... but I do remember is was a bit on the expensive side. I have cats though, and even though they aren't allowed in the critter room, I wasn't willing to take the chance that Goose could get hurt if a cat ever got in there.

Marchioro makes some excellent cages for the U.S. market. They have one the size of a guinea pig cage with tiny bar spacing suitable for mice- It is SHOCKINGLY expensive, though!!!!  They can sometimes be found on eBay or Amazon.

It's pretty easy in the UK... We have a sticky somewhere around here with good links to cages in the UK.

I've seen some pretty good UK cages around and have never found anything that compares in the US. The suitable sized and spaced bar cages I've found here are very expensive and are bound to have some flaw in the design. I guess UK and other European manufactures just know what they are doing! Razz

I've noticed the same thing when looking online at different cages - the really cool ones always come from the UK. Good job UK!!! Very Happy I believe that the minimum cage size standards are larger in European countries. Clap Yeah!

Germany is the best for cage standards for small animals, particularly with hamsters. They really go above and beyond, even a little over the top sometimes Smile
But yes, there are some fantastic cages here Very Happy I am hoping to do a cage upgrade when I move house, but there are so many good options I can't decide what one I want to get! Sorry, didn't mean to rub it in Razz

America sells pretty bad commercial cages! I'll ask around for any Americans who use barred cages. I'm also considering bin cages.

I could be wrong, but wouldn't a bin cage have the same ventilation as a tank? I guess unless you put screen on the sides too.

Do you mean as a tank? In that case, well, yes, but I just think it can fit more enrichment than a tank. I'm kind of iffy on the idea of it, though.
