Home remedies due to vet closure? Empty Home remedies due to vet closure?

Post by sclonder on Mon 23 Mar 2020, 1:45 pm

Hi,
Barb has developed a cough and is chittering, I'm thinking it's a respiratory infection, which I would usually go straight to the vet for. I have not changed bedding material (I do change the bedding regularly though lol) and there have been no changes to diet. My biggest fear is that she is somewhat stressed from moving from my dorm all the way home and the jostling, however mitigated I tried to make it, shook her up. (I had the two placed next to a open window in my dorm, would that improve circulation?)
Due to the circumstances of a global pandemic, there are no vets open around me sadly Worry
Is there any way to home remedy a RI? Like are there any recommended products on Amazon I could order?

-------

Quite honestly I was thinking this would be a good place to discuss all home remedies or preventive measures for the upcoming weeks due to vet closures.

Stay safe y'all!

@sclonder Something that might help is giving her a steam bath! Run your shower on hot, and either hold her or put her in a small enclosure of some sort, and close the door to the bathroom. Leave her in there for an hour or so to steam. It could help clear out her respiratory system a bit.

Also, if you happen to have an albuterol inhaler on hand, you could put her in a small enclosed space and give her a little puff of albuterol, we've used mine on mice and rats in emergencies as well.

Hope this helps, good luck!

I have basicacally done what the other user suggested. What I tend to do is I put my mice in my bathtub (secure the drain obviously and making sure the tub is clean/cleared of anything) make a small habitat in my bathtub for the day and place my humidifier in the bathroom then w/ the door shut. It really seems to have helped my mice on a number or occasions previously. Note~ when my mice are feeling well they can jump out of the tub so make certain to be aware of possible escapees (if you decide to do the tub situation).
