Where can we keep our mouse?
Hi everybody!
I'm so lucky that my boyfriend has said yes to us having pet mice. I'm very excited since it'll be my first pets since I was a child.
The problem is that I don't know if we really have the space for it. That may sound weird when you think about the size of a mouse, but we live in a small one-bedroom department. In our living room there is not a single piece of wall that doesn't have floor-to-ceiling windows or furniture in front of it. Because of that I don't really see any room for the cage in the living room. So I wanted to know if any of you have experience with keeping mice in the bedroom. Are they very active at night, and will they make a lot of noise to the point where you can't sleep? A little but of moving around will probably be fine, but if they are going to run around like crazy all night, then that obviously isn't going to work. I heard the some people take out the wheels at night, because of the noise. Would that be okay?
If any of you have any tips or good ideas on how to solve problems concerning limited living space and mouse cages, please share them here.
Thank you in advance

Re: Where can we keep our mouse?
As long as you get a semi-silent or silent wheel, their shouldn't be too much noise. Furniture can also be converted to cages, I don't know if you know about Ikea cages, but the detolf cabinet is a GREAT cage for small pets. They average around 40$ which is the same price most of the pet store cages are. You could also just get a fish tank and use that! Youtube is a great place for space saving diys, But the detolf is an amazing cage with a great amount of space. How many mice are you planning on getting? A 10 gallon tank is enough for 3 females

Yes, the mice will be active at night, and I agree that the wheel will not be a problem, if it's not silent you can oil it with a bit of olive oil, and make sure it cannot hit the glass. Silent Spinners and Flying Saucers are usually the most quiet. All my mice are kept in the bedroom and have not caused an issue, although the gnawing on toilet paper tubes and what not takes some getting used to. You can really stick a 10 gallon tank anywhere, so get creative! The mice are definitely worth any noise. If you can make space on top of a table or dresser, or enough space to mount a shelf, it will be fine. I also keep all of my mouse supplies in a large, thin bin under my bed to save space.

Thank you so much for answering!
I was planning on getting two or three mice, and I have been looking at this cage http://www.zooplus.dk/shop/smaadyr/indendoers_bure/mus/under_100/255624
I know everything is in danish and metric, but it's around 29.5x17.7 inches.
If my boyfriend is okay with having them in the bedroom, then I think we're going to try that first, and see how it goes

I don't know how many sq inches that is but the minimum is 360 sq inches. That cage honestly seems very overpriced and I think a fish tank may be your best bet, I don't know if they have petco where you live, but they are having a dollar per gallon sale right now.

I believe that dollar per gallon sales are timed differently based on the area, but Petco does them quite often, and most PetSmart's have started to as well. If there is not one in your area at all you can look for used tanks online.GabbiLuvsMice wrote:I don't know how many sq inches that is but the minimum is 360 sq inches. Re: Where can we keep our mouse?
Hi and welcome
I have kept mice in my bedroom in the past and I currently keep a hamster in my bedroom. I use silent spinner wheels and don't have a problem with them being too noisy
Yes they make a small amount of quiet noise sometimes, but I am a very light sleeper and my mice/hamster never wake me up.
The minimum size for 3 girls or 1 boy is a 10 gallon tank, which is 200 square inches, not 360. But more space gives you more room to put more toys. The tank you linked to is a really nice size for mice, and I have heard good things about it, but as others have said you may be able to get something similar for less money from a local pet store, if you are from the US. Unless you are from the UK or Europe?

Remember that the prize is in DKK not US dollars

I am from Denmark in Northern Europe. Options are a bit limited here I think, but I honestly don't mind spending a bit of money on something nice that is going to last

Re: Where can we keep our mouse?
I keep my mice in my bedroom. The first night was hard, but after that, I was so used to it they never wake me up or bother me.
I use a 10 gallon aquarium for my two girls. It's heavy and hard to clean, so I'm actually looking into changing it - I cut my finger on it cleaning today, actually. I'm sure if you find a lightweight tank it wouldn't be a problem, but mine is heavy glass.
Flying saucers are the most silent wheels, I think. Mesh wheels are a favorite among mice, as they love looping on them, but they need oiling with coconut oil or something of the sort when they start squeaking. I don't like silent spinners, actually, as I found them to be...not silent.
Anyways. I digress.
That cage you linked looks nice to me. Good luck.

Re: Where can we keep our mouse?
I keep my mouse cage on a wall-mounted TV stand, something like this:

Except mine has a metal bottom, but that was the closest thing to what I have that I could find in a cursory Amazon search. It supports a 10 gallon aquarium without trouble.
As for noise, silent spinners and flying saucers are both pretty damn quiet as long as the mice don't push them up against anything. My girls prefer the saucers so that's what I use, but the silent spinners are the quieter of the two, though it's really close.

Cool Isamaria
I have always wanted to go to Denmark. I am from the UK and have used Zooplus before, it's a pretty good website. I think that cage would be a lovely size for some mice, plenty of room for them to play in and have lots of toys. I have heard good things about that cage and I considered getting it for my dwarf hamster, so I think it's a good option.
For some reason glass tanks like that cost a lot more in the UK and Europe than in the USA, so I actually think that's quite a good price, and as you say it should last you a long time.

Re: Where can we keep our mouse?
If you get that tank, you may want to get more than three girls, perhaps four. When first getting mice, it's important to make sure their enclosure is just the right size for them, no smaller, no larger. Smaller tanks are bad for obvious reasons, but giving them too much space before they're tame can cause nervous or aggressive behavior.
