Dig Boxes? Empty Dig Boxes?

Post by Cooper and Charlie Wed 23 Sep 2020, 9:31 am

Hi, I want to give my 2 boys a dig box and had a few questions.

-How deep and big does a dig box need to be, could I use a shoe box?

-What substrates are safe to use?

-What extra things can I add in it to it to give them extra enrichment?

-How long can I keep it in the cage?

Thank you! Very Happy   Love

Dig Boxes? Empty Re: Dig Boxes?

Dig boxes are great sources of enrichment. I would recommend Eco Earth Coconut Fiber Substrate as it’s a lot like dirt and will feel very natural to them, and it’s great to give your mice a variety of textures in their enclosure. It’s commonly sold for reptiles but it’s 100% safe for mice. A shoebox is perfect, and even larger than most dig boxes, though there’s no maximum size, and they’ll love it. One thing to note is that if your mice are avid chewers they may chew up the box and the contents might spill out, although it should be great for most mice. I once had a mouse that would destroy about a toy a week because she chewed so much, it all just depends on the mouse. You can keep dig boxes in the cage all the time, ready for use at any time of your mouse’s choosing, you would only take it out to clean it for any other reason you see fit. It’s great to bury treats or food in the dig box as it gives them something to forage for. If it’s a shoebox you can also add things like paper towel rolls or toilet paper rolls half lodged into the ground to help them start tunnels. It’s great you’re giving your mice a dig box, and I wish you the best of luck. They’re going to love it!
