I asked a question a while back (Watery eye? Getting worse - HELP) regarding the left eye of one of my girls. In short, she squinted it a ton and it was watering. I switched out my aspen bedding for paper, and her eye seems to be a little less irritated. It is still red around the eye and watery though. I saw a youtube video by ErinsAnimals about homemade eye drops for practically any animal. However, I don't know if my girl has irritation, and allergy, an infection, or what. Can I still use the saline solution (https://youtu.be/r8koJ1_BhWo?t=175) and see if it helps, or would it be worse to use it on her eye if I don't know what's wrong with it? Is this solution a good idea?

I have been so tied up with so many other things this year and most of last, that I feel like I'm losing some of my wound care expertise.  Back at home I have my master manual out to start reviewing again.  I'll try to help you.

Homemade saline solution is fine for rinsing wounds and irritations, as long as you get your salt-to-water ratio correct and are careful to boil and cool the water, as well as to sterilize any container you plan to store it in.  Small batches are better, so they can be used at room temperature and won't need refrigeration.  (Imagine having an irritated eye and having brrrrr-cold saline out of the fridge spritzed into it.)

The salt-to-water ratio I have is 1 tablespoon : 2 cups.

What I do instead is I keep bottles of saline solution -- marketed for contact lens wearers -- both at my house and at work (yeah, I'm the unofficial SOMETHING'S-IN-MY-EYE-GETITOUTGETITOUT and CAN-YOU-SEE-A-SPLINTER-IN-MY-FINGER? fixer).  That's just the straight saline solution, not lens cleaning solution.  The store-bought stuff has some small amounts of preservatives in it to deter bacterial growth, and so can be kept at room temperature.

Saline in action:  In the summer of 2019, after Papa had been in the hospital for a few weeks, I could tell that, day by day, his eyes were becoming very irritated.  I'd mention it to his nurses, but I never saw any attention to the problem.  Finally, one evening on my way from work to the hospital, I stopped in a store and bought a two-pack of saline solution to do it myself, along with some oral moisturizer since Papa was unable to swallow to drink anything.  Happily, when I walked into his room in the ICU, his night nurse Matt was busy at work giving Papa's eyes a deluxe saline treatment, and when I asked about the mouth Matt said he would be working on that next!  Yay!

But remember that frequent rinsing of an infected eye may make it look better and feel better, but may not be able to prevent the infection from spreading deeper.  A veterinarian is the best person to diagnose and treat any problem with your mouse, and to put your mind at ease.

I just saw a few minutes ago that she now has some blood red color under her eye. She was scratching at it this morning, but either way it doesn't seem to look better. I'll ask my mom if I can take her to the vet. I also need to find a vet first, as I've never needed to take my previous hamster to the vet and this is my first time with mice. Thank you so much for the help!
