I was at the pet store earlier to buy some more food for my girls. Disappointingly, a lot was sold out and they only had two different brands of mouse food in stock. I normally get Tropical Carnival Gourmet Pet Mouse & Rat food. Today, I bought Kaytee Fiesta Mouse and Rat food. I'll list the ingredients and analysis of both below. Is the Kaytee Fiesta mix okay?

I would not recommend it because the mice will, and can pick through the pellets and just eat the seeds! Wink

Kaytee Fiesta
Corn, Ground Corn,

When the first ingredient (in this case the second as well)in any petfood is corn, I would never buy it. Cheap foods like Kaytee use it as filler to bulk up a bag while keeping the price low.

Is there anything I can feed with the food mix to make is better? Fresh fruits, veggies, grains? There does seem to be a bit more corn than the Tropical Fiesta mix I normally get, and I have a feeling the pellets are mostly corn too.

I mix a different brand of pellet with whatever more diverse food I'm offering. The pellet bag is big for a small group of mice so it's not very expensive.

Corn is actually pretty nutritious as far as grains go so if it's in the mix, I personally don't worry about it. I avoid it if it's the first ingredient, but I wouldn't call it a filler when it comes to mice. Fillers have little to no nutritional value which just can't be said for corn. Nonetheless, I still wouldn't use or recommend the Kaytee blend. It's less than ideal in more ways than one.

This really isn't a good way to look at mouse diets. While, yes, mice prefer the seeds and grain in the mix, if you just be patient they will eventually eat the pellets, too. Removing such a vital part of a mouse's diet like seeds can be detrimental to their quality of life and remove a very enriching part of their lifestyle.

@River what would you say makes corn nutritious? Smile

I'm no dietician, but from what I can tell it's a source of fiber, protein, potassium, magnesium, different vitamins, beta-carotene (though not a ton of it)...so on. Of course, whole corn is better for pretty much all of these but as a grain, it isn't that bad. Not a super-food or anything, but most people don't question the presence of any equally-nutritious grains so I don't fuss about it. I certainly don't prefer it as a main ingredient, but just being there...no biggy IMO.

I agree. I'd say my mice actually pick through the seeds and corn and eat that last, but I wait a while to refill their bowl if it's just full of seeds.

These are BOTH awful foods. Feed a pellet like Oxbow.

I hear lots of good things about tropical carnival and not as many good things about anything kaytee brand.
Sparkles, pellets can be controversial because they don't give the mouse the same enrichment as a seed mix, and, if you leave the mix in long enough that they have to eat all of it, they should be getting the same nutrition as pellets would provide.

My vote is to go with tropical carnival but go for the hamster version instead of the mouse one, they're basically same but the mouse one has slightly cheaper ingredients.
