Mouse squeaking loudly and unresponsive after Empty Mouse squeaking loudly and unresponsive after

Post by Rubyandwillow Tue 02 Feb 2021, 2:55 pm

Hello,
Lately I have been hearing increasingly more squeaking coming from my mice. about a month ago 1 of my 3 girls had passed so now I only have 2. I thought the group balance was thrown off and that that was the reason they were fighting more. Yesterday however I once again heard squeaking coming from them and I decided to check it out. I noticed that actually only 1 of my mice was squeaking and the other was nowhere near her. She was squeaking very loudly, shaking her head and overall just moving very strangely. This lasted for about 5 to 10 seconds. After that she was just sitting still and shaking. I also noticed that there were drops of what looked like water coming out of her mouth. 2 hours later this happened again. I went to check it out and I picked her up once she stopped squeaking. Normally she does not like being picked up at all but she didn’t even seem to notice it. She was not responding to me touching her and there was once again liquid buildup in her mouth. After about 10 to 30 seconds she seemed to notice she was on my hand and ran off. After this she acted completely normal. There is seemingly nothing wrong with her outside of these moments and she acts like she always has. What could this be?

I am not a vet by any means, and this is just my opinion. I think that she may be having seizures, or another type of phchological issue. I would take her to the vet immediatly.

I will get her to a vet. I don’t know what a vet could do for her though since she is acting completely normal and active and there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with her visually either.

My assumption would also be some type of neurological condition, but a vet would be your best bet to figuring this out for certain. I’d think it would be unlikely they’d do any diagnostic tests but if you catch it happening again try to video it. That could be helpful.

Poor thing. It does sound very stressful for her. Sad

This member had a mouse who experienced seizures. It was too uncomfortable for them to describe, but they did share how they were requested to 'record' it and that might help. Take videos when you can. They don't often run blood tests, so collecting as much info as possible will be your best bet.

I'd also see this link on seizures in rats, chances are they're similar. https://ratguide.com/health/neurological/seizures.php

I'd try to limit her stress levels in the meantime. Keep the area dim and quiet and try not to bother her much; it might help to not fully clean the cage, but leave some used bedding in so it always smells familiar.

I think it will be very difficult of my to record it actually happening since it only lasts a few seconds but I’ll try to to get a video of what she’s like after. Thanks everyone for the advice! It seems that most of the time when a mouse gets seizures more and more frequently they die soon after so now I’m really worried.

I'm just wondering how your girl is? Still happening? I'm afraid it sounds like seizures, but unless a vet saw it happen it would not be easy to diagnose. At least when animals are having a seizure they are not aware nor are they in pain, so take comfort in that. An actual seizure usually lasts less than a minute, but it may take many more minutes for your pet to return to normal awareness so just remain calm, maybe reassure her after, if she is receptive.

@Dee67 She is still just as active as she has always been. The vet has told me to time the seizures and get video of it if I can. Unfortunately I have not yet been able to do so since she always gets them while she’s in a hide. Strangely enough the attacks have switched from mainly happening during the night to mainly happening during the day. Some days she’ll get no seizures(?) and some days she’ll get multiple within a few hours. She always goes completely back to normal within a minute though.

Update- I got my mice more stuff and made their cage a lot more crowded. I can tell my girl is a lot more comfortable in there now and the attacks have gone down as well. I haven’t heard one in over a week so I think it may be stress related! She has always been more shy than my other mice so I’m gonna do my best to make her as comfortable as I can and spend more time bonding with her so she is more comfortable with me as well.

I am sooo very pleased to hear this! Dance Hopefully she'll keep on doing well in her enriched home. I'm sure she's enjoying it a lot.
