Is Yoga mat safe for mice?
Aloha everyone!
I was interested in lining my bin cage with a material at the bottom to make clean up a little easier on me. I have been going back and forth with what type of material for a while and have been stumped. I then came across an old yoga mat that was stored away and barely used. It would be perfect to make two sizes for my bin cage but I was just wondering what everyones thoughts were on using yoga mats in the cage with my mice. My two concerns are 1. them chewing on it and ingesting it 2. them somehow getting under the yoga mat layer and getting stuck between the bing cage and yoga mat. They already like to lift up my paper towel layer and tunnel underneath it so I worry they will try to do the same with he yoga mat. Any advice it appreciated!

I agree with your concerns, it wouldn't be very edible if they chewed on it and it'd likely be easy to get their incisors into. Can I ask what exactly you're looking for in the layer / how it would make it easier? Maybe we can suggest something.

Maybe you can find a solid plastic tray that's the right size? What dimensions do you need?

I wouldn't recommend it. You could look for the right sized plastic tray as EverythingAnimal suggested, and if you can't find it, you could always cut a bigger piece of plastic to size. Though, honestly... I think regardless of what you put down, the mice are probably going to find a way to get under it. They're crafty little things, and love to burrow.

I'd just use made to fit cardboard that is turned up an inch or so around its perimeter. Holds in mess, safe for chewing, may get a bit damp but you can have several on hand made out of box bottoms and just replace as needed. Homemade tray, easy peasy.
