Quarantining mice advice Empty Quarantining mice advice

Post by zozzlezeb Fri 19 Feb 2021, 8:36 pm

Hello everyone! So my boyfriend has a single female mouse that has been on her own for a few months now. His mouse is a year and 4 months old. I am finally getting the opportunity to take her so I can integrate her with my two girls who just turned one year old. I really do want to take her because I know I can give her a better life and make her happy. But quarantining and introductions worry me especially the quarantine. I don't have many places to keep the mouse for quarantine besides my room but my girls are currently in my room. The only room that I can safely keep her in is my bathroom which is next to my room. My door is a sliding door and it has a gap when fully closed along the wall and on the bottom. My bathroom door fully closes but it still has a gap at the bottom. My bathroom door is right next to my bedroom door so that worries me. I love my two girls with all my heart and I don't want them to get any illnesses transmitted through the air. Not to mention my two girls both have issues with URI and are getting treated. Would keeping my boyfriends mouse in my bathroom for the quarantine period be okay under these circumstances? I really want to take her so she can live a happier mousie life, it's going to break my heart if I can't take her. Worry
Any advice on this and the quarantine process would be so great! I read the quarantine post on this site so I think I have a basic understanding but any further information would be super helpful!

I have quarantined my newest mouse in my bathroom because that is the only safe space from the cats besides the other girls tank. We put a towel to block the spot under the door so you can try that. We take her cage out of the bathroom whenever there is someone awake to watch her in another room.

PERSONAL OPINION THAT COULD BE VERY WRONG
I am no expert at all but do you need to quarantine her? she has not had contact with another mouse since she is a lone female. I thought that was the point of quarantine to make sure the breeder or store did not have sick mice. Since she has been with your boyfriend she has probably passed the 14 day quarantine.... again I could be completely wrong so wait until you hear from someone else about the quarantine period

I think you could argue that since you know her owner and (I assume) visited regularly, this might've already counted as off-site quarantine...? I might be wrong. Laughing

The only thing I worry about is that my boyfriend doesn't really clean the bedding or the cage very often. Maybe once a month or longer so I worry being in a dirty environment like that would cause some sort of illness. He also doesn't handle her often and I haven't seen her in a while cuz of covid so I'm not sure if shes been showing symptoms. She seems energetic when my boyfriend shows me her on the phone, climbing and such. Also putting a towel under the bathroom door is a good idea thank you!

I haven't visited her often cuz of covid and my boyfriend doesn't handle her often so idk if shes showing symptoms of anything. But she is a pretty resilient mouse shes lived with previous mice my boyfriend had who were sick (one of them had a uri) and she never showed any sign of illness that I or he have seen.

Ah, I see.

I think when it comes to quarantine, you do what you can. Technically speaking, the ideal quarantine is in a completely different airspace; like, a different building. Most people can't do that, so we usually just do a different room. In this case I think just doing whatever you can do is going to be worth it to get this girl in a colony soon. My advice is to just do your best.

I see. so I would do the bathroom. One thing I did was that I did not know if her cage was little mouse proof so I put her in the tub and threw the curtain around the pole so nothing was hanging low for her to climb up. That way I doubted she could get out of the cage but if she did I doubt she could get out of the tub. That way she would have two obstacles to get through before she even had a chance to get to the towel under the door. I hope that makes sense its late and I need to go to bed

I'm glad this little girl will have a home with other mice and I hope they all love each other and your quarantine goes well and your introductions. It sounds like she will be much happier with you and her new friends. Keep us posted and post some pictures if you can.

Unfortunately, some stuff came up and I might not be able to get her. I am going to try my best to try and get so I can, hopefully, take her home soon! Thank you everyone for your advice, I feel a lot more prepared to take her and make sure she and my girls are safe!
