Hi guys,

My mouse has either hotspots or mites and I gotta treat her in the meantime before our vet appointment which won't be until the 12th. I can't find Ivermectin at the moment and got Vetericyn to help relief her scratching and itchy spots.

I'm not sure how to properly apply the Vetericyn spray onto her. I have trouble getting her to stay still and not run away. She's very small, doesn't want to be held or touched closely on her skin, and is very agile. She'll run away if I get things close to her like the spray bottle or my fingers. The directions on the bottle say to clean the affected areas before spraying but I can't move her fur. Am I supposed to grasp her or tie her or something? Doesn't seem ideal for her for sure..

Is there also anything I could probably do about her claws? Like file them a bit to unsharpen them? I won't do this if this isn't safe and risky; just concerned about her scratching off the medicine and her skin making herself bleed. I wish she had little mittens and a cone to prevent herself from scratching herself ): Reminds me of how my parents had to put mittens on my hands when I was a baby because I kept scratching myself

And is there something I could do to prevent her from licking off the medicine after applying it?

This is the Vetericyn: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetericyn-plus-hot-spot-antimicrobial-gel-for-dogs

I'm not sure if the product is safe or not. It says safe for all animals but...a teeny tiny mouse? Anyone? As for application, no, do not restrain her, you could scoop her up in a toilet paper roll, then tuck her in to the crook of your elbow. Then use a qtip to apply a mild natural cleanser around the area, and rinse well with another wet qtip. Then put a tiny dot of your product on another qtip and gently apply. Again, I'd go with the most natural products you can find, like pure aloe vera. Distract her from scratching or licking by playing with her and giving her some great treats. Are you putting this on one spot or is she scratching and sore all over?
Please, I am NOT a vet, medical professional, or even a mouse expert. This is personal advice only. It would be best for you to call the vet and speak directly to them about your questions, the product you are using, and proper treatment until you see your vet in person.

I did have to restrain my mouse (who suffered from ulcerative dermatitis / OCD) to medicate her. Their sores hurt, and putting medication on them is uncomfortable, just like it is for us. If she'll let you do it without any restraining then that's best, but it does turn out to be necessary sometimes.

I wish I'd taken a video! I'll try to describe it. I'd put her on a flat surface, like a table, and then put my thumb and my Index finger on either side of her head with my other fingers cupping her body. It's a bit like the burrito method minus the burrito, I guess? I used the same hold for oral and topical medications. My mice have always been rather tame, though, so this may not work for you. There are some restraint methods in one of the stickies, I think.

You can put something in the cage to file the claws down gradually (I recommend this for most mice as a precaution) but I did actually trim Graham's nails for her as she got old and less active. Laughing This shouldn't be necessary for you, though. A few rocks or something like that in the cage will do just fine if she's running on them. As for keeping her from licking medicine, all medicines should be safe to ingest, but you can distract her to let it sit. Cheerios!

Vetericyn is safe IIRC but I second calling your vet and asking if they think it'd be a good idea. Calls are free. Smile

This link has two videos showing how to hold mice for medication. In the video, oral medication is being, but it’s the same technique.

Lol. When I said don't restrain her I was more meaning to gently say, Dont tie her, as @banilya had mentioned that. Were you able to apply any medicine banilya?

Yes I got to call a vet to confirm the Vetericyn and they said it's safe to dab a little bit on the wounds with a cotton ball/swab

I managed to do it twice, luckily..! It's a bit difficult to get her to not scratch herself and distract her. When she falls asleep though no worries about scratching.

Got to find another vet that has an earlier appointment for Monday instead

Thanks you guys I hope everything goes well for my little sweetie Love

Now that my boy is needing Baytril I'm extremely grateful to Graham for being so calm and easy to medicate. Laughing I don't remember having half the struggle. I feel you, though! The table method is the easiest so far! Or a good cookie.
