Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
It finally arrived, but uh...I don't understand the instructions, and neither does my mother so, we resolved to ask here instead.
Dose: 1/6th ivermectin to water. Mix 1 part ivermectin with 5 parts water. Shake well. Also shake often! The ivermectin does mix with water well, but it will begin to separate after sitting. For best results, shake it as often as you can. I shook it before spraying, each time.
1/6th of what exactly? A ml? How would we get 1/6th of a ml?
Or what...what is it?

Re: Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
I usually get a little hairspray bottle for like $1 so I can mist bedding, and fill it with 5 tablespoons of water and 1 tablespoon of ivermectin. You can make more or less with different measurements, as long as it's 5 parts water and 1 part ivermectin.

Re: Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
I mixed up 1 tablespoon of ivermectin with 5 tablespoons of water. This gave me quite a lot but I believe Norman's Mom had said on the old forum that it stays good for about 6 months? (Can someone confirm?)
Shake well. Then I measured out 0.05 ml to drop between the mouse's shoulder blades. BUT recently I noticed the directions give a different measurement but I could have swore it was .05 ml. I know others don't measure exact amounts a just put "a drop" between the mouse's shoulders.

Re: Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
Okay! How would I put the ivermectin on the mice with a spray bottle? Would I mist them, or just put it directly onto their shoulder blades and spray?

Re: Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
Or would I put it on the mice with something else entirely?

Re: Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
From the ivermectin page:
Spray a fine mist on the back of each mouse. Alternatively, you can use a syringe to drop the ivermectin between your mouse's shoulder blades. It is recommended that each squirt or drop should deliver approximately 0.01 ml (0.01cc). Make sure you cover the eyes of the mouse when spraying. If the ivermectin gets in the eyes, it will cause irritation or worse. I did NOT spray anything but the mouse's back (no belly, head, etc). If too much gets on the mouse, wipe excess off.

Re: Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
I like to put a drop on my finger and then just "pet" it on their back. I've never sprayed the mice so I have no tips.
I remember NM saying 6 months for the mixed stuff, too. I once asked her for clarification on the dosage, 0.01mL or 0.05mL, and she said 0.01mL was correct. Then a couple days later she told someone else 0.05mL. Maybe it's not a biggie? lol

Re: Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
A fine mist - does that mean like, one spray? Honestly I think I'm gonna rely on the dropper!
Did 0.05 work for you, Calla? Or should I just stick to 0.01? What would you recommend?

Re: Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
We'll that explains my confusion.
Doing the .05 ml drop worked for me every time. I didn't see any side effects. But I really thought that was the correct dose so maybe it's better if you go with the .01 ml. But like I said I know many don't even bother measuring. They just put "a drop."

Re: Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
My measurey-thingy doesn't even get that small, so I'm just gonna use 'a drop' like abeona said. Fingers crossed.

Re: Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
Okay, so I did the drop, but the 'dropper' came out in more of a stream - luckily I have another one on hand and it didn't get in any of the girls eyes, but I'm worried they may have got too much? I did wipe the excess off. Will they be okay?
EDIT: Oh, and, should I refrigerate the diluted ivermectin? Or will it be fine just sitting out with the rest of the pet stuff, in the garage?

Re: Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
No spraying the mouse! It's too easy to get it in the eyes or nose. Just place a drop on the back of the neck and sort of smear it down the back so it sinks in. Then just keep the mouse occupied for about 10 minutes. If they groom it off, it's ok. They make groom it off of each other, that's okay too.
edit: how much are we talking? a few drops is ok but a teaspoon isn't.
edit again: the garage is fine

Re: Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
It was just a few drops, I believe. Definitely no teaspoon, though - so they'll be fine?
They're just sort of playing around in the new bedding; they love to burrow in it, so to be safe, I decided to just give them that ceramic critter bath thing and take the wood/cardboard toys away till treatment is done, and let them build up any other nests they'd like instead. Not grooming it off that I see.
Edit: what exactly should I be keeping them occupied from doing?

Re: Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
yep, they'll be fine. it has a wide therapeutic range. We use the lowest possible dose but higher doses are still safe.
Just try to keep them from licking it off for about 10 mintues. it works best when it soaks into the skin.

Re: Help understanding ivermectin dosage?
Okay! I didn't spread it into the fur that much, didn't think it was necessary, but they aren't licking it off either, so I'll just remember to rub it in throughout the rest of the treatment. This is gonna be taking a few steps back with Grahams training, for sure! Hah.
I did a little experiment with a 1/4 a teaspoon measuring thing and it was less than that, so I'm glad it's definitely okay.
