Just wondering what anybody thinks about this cage. It is fir wood, top only ventilation.

I looked at that too. It's really awesome, but unless the wooden platforms could be covered with cut plexiglass or replaced with plastic, I would imagine it would soon be soaked with pee and a stinky mess.

I read a bit more online about it, reviews etc. Two problems appeared - stinky from pee on wood as you comment, and people say when constructing it, it doesn't fit together well, splits and leaves gaps. This is very disappointing because if it came with plexiglass and was better constructed it would indeed be awesome.

I never read the reviews before - when I saw this originally both the wooden interior and the fact that I would need 3 cages for my boys ($$$) ruled out any expensive enclosures -  but overall they seem positive. It's really a wonderful big cage for one male or some girls and any glitches could probably be rectified without much difficulty.

There are clear coats on the market that are non-toxic and pet-safe.

But really, my mice love their very large bins that are nearly as big as this cage.Smile

I just have one 27g boy, I think he'd like it. He already has 3 separate play areas, but, well, you know 😉

Indeed, I do.:lol

Mine each have a huge bin, complete with elevated sleeping "atriums" and also a playpen so big I had to up-end it to get it through the door of their room.

These teeny mice have more space than my rats did.

I actually have this cage. I use it for one of my dwarf hamsters. I flipped the front panel upside down by accident when building it, but it actually ended up working out very well - I can use the door on the front while still having deep bedding. It’s roughly 1,000 sq in, so it’s about 200 sq in bigger than any bin that I know of. I chose to leave out the levels since hamsters generally aren’t very good climbers. I’d agree that they’d probably get pretty smelly unless you coated/sealed the wood. Also, the mesh used at the top is 1/2”, so I’d worry about escapes if they reached it. If someone did want to use this cage for mice, I’d recommend layering more mesh over the top or replacing the 1/2” completely.

Oh, half-inch mesh! Good to know. I had two huge rat cages on hand when I got my mice, but couldn't use them since the mesh sides on those are also 1/2" and I thought it would be dangerous for use with mice. I visualized them either escaping or getting stuck halfway out.

Hm... The ventilation doesn't seem that good. Because of the wood, would it them make it harder for air to flow? If you're looking for a new cage I would recommend the Prevue 528 Smile

I was a little worried about the ventilation too, I thought taking a small drill bit and making numerous small holes in the plexiglass areas might work.
