Burnt enclosure perfered
A bit over a month ago I cleaned the tanks and accidentally threw one of my wire mesh cups in the trash with all the old bedding. Well that bedding was burned and later I found the cup.
It had no damage to the wire it just burned off the paint so I cleaned it off and placed it in the tank.
Ever since then this thing has been a hotspot with the mice packing a few to several into the thing from time to time.

Now there is a larger wire mesh one right next to the one they all pack into. It is easily 2 or even 3 times the size.
Note the fancy mice also sleep in or around this burnt wire mesh cup when they can. But there size gets them kicked out when it is bedtime and several smaller deers squeeze in.
I have 4 other mesh things, over a dozen tight boxes, 2 or 3 big boxes, 2 or 3 bedding dig boxes, a rubber hose, a rope ball, and a one gallon 3/4 full sand dig box for them to sleep in(soon to be 5 gallons for even more tunneling) . Yet a few times a week I catch this burnt wire mesh cup packed no matter where it is placed.
I have a few fancy that like sleeping with the deers and know if I I can get them to all like the bigger wire mesh cup as much as they like the smaller one they should all be able to fit.
Is it because it is burnt or some other reason why they like this little cup?
Should I burn the larger wire mesh cup also?
Remove the smaller cup all together and see what happens?
Or add another smaller cup?

Hi! I’m not sure if I’m confused or just uninformed… what do you mean “burnt”? The cup has been exposed to fire?

Re: Burnt enclosure perfered
Did it have any type of paint, powder coating or clear on it before?
(What type of mice are they?)

Re: Burnt enclosure perfered
I have a mix of fancy and deer mice. I caught a pregnant mother and kept her a few days till the weekend when I could release her. I make sure any mice I catch in my 2 liter live trap are released in the morning. In the winter I keep them in a 20 gallon for a few days/weeks until the next one is caught. They have lots of food over that time then I release them in the morning a few miles down the road by an abandoned barn.
The mother had pinkies in those days and has since passed. But I have kept the deers and the liters they made since then inside the enclosure. I have a rather large enclosure and the deers are very submissive to the fancy mice. They stay inside the enclosure and know when to move from one tank to the other during cleaning. I have one or two agressive fancy. But the deers know they can out maneuver them and everyone generally gets along.
The cup was from a desk organizer kit. The mice love wire mesh things. From time to time they will pack the letter organizer and are always climbing the sides of the mesh wastebasket with a few inches of bedding. Its rare anyone sleeps under the bedding though.
I shread books from good will for bedding into 1" pieces they can easily carry. Mostly out of date stuff or dictionaries with that glossy paper. Between the boxes and bedding I fill up two 13 gallon trash bags . I break up the sticks they have been chewing/climbing and everything goes into a incinerator that I only need to use once every 2 weeks.
The cup somehow managed to get thrown in and somehow survived. Although the powercoat was burnt off. But they seem to love it despite it being cleaned several times since then.
