When to get new mice Empty When to get new mice

Post by Blackcandyapple on Mon 25 Jul 2016, 3:30 pm

Tabi is being treated for possible pnemona/uri and possible mites so when should I bring in new mice I'm afraid if I have them in my room (obviously not in the same tank) they could catch any of these, should I wait until after she's done being treated?

And now I'm worried that after she goes through her treatment that if I bring in a new mouse it'll have something she can catch like mites or a uri...

It's true that some of these viruses can be airborne. Perhaps if they're on entirely different sides of the room, it'll be safe? I'm not certain.
That said, wait until she's done being treated, just to be on the safe side.

That's why we quarantine. If you bring in a new mouse, you can treat it with ivermectin while it's in quarantine so it won't have mites, and monitor it for any signs of URI or illness so it won't transmit.

For a quarantine, you need to keep the quarantined, incoming mice in a separate room. Otherwise, the quarantine is nullified. Always treat all incoming mice for parasties with ivermectin right away, whether they're showing symptoms or not, because if they didn't come from a reputable show breeder, the chances of them having mites is 99%.

When choosing mice from pet stores (as that's my only option) I noticed one was breathing hard so should I not even think about getting any of the others that were in the same cage as it?

I, personally, wouldn't get any of the others in the same cage. Who knows if it's contagious.
