Re: Baby mouse not drinking much
Very sad news, but unfortunately not uncommon with hand-reared mice. You are very kind to try and help these babies.

So sorry to hear that. With baby mice, us humans just can't take as good care of them as their mothers can. All we can do is try our hardest and hope. You've done nothing wrong. These things just happen.

Re: Baby mouse not drinking much
Thanks for kind words. The other mouse is doing really well and seems to be happy. I'm thinking of releasing her in a nature reserve not far from here as we have a couple of cats next door. Bit nervous about it to be honest as we've all become attached but have time to prepare as I think she is about 15 days old. Can't see the article about a mouse shelter, can someone post me a link? Thank you

This is the mouse release shelter that's recommended on our Wild Mouse Care page. Was that what you meant? http://mouseranch.com/FYI/releaseShelter.shtml

That sounds like a nice place to release her. Can you post some photos so we can see her before you release her?

A nature reserve sounds like a wonderful home for her. She'll be very happy there! I forget if you have any pet mice of your own. Do you perhaps plan to get any once your wild girl is free?

Re: Baby mouse not drinking much
Thanks for the link, excellent information. No we don't have any mice at the moment but I'm seriously considering fostering a couple of domestic mice from a rescue. We have all fallen in love with this tiny mouse, I think she is a wood mouse. She's definitely growing and becoming much more active. She gets very excited before milk time and makes us all smile with her spinning round in between paint brush refills. Then she slows down and falls asleep on my hand. I will post some photos tomorrow.

She sounds adorable! You'd make an excellent mouse foster parent

Re: Baby mouse not drinking much
Here is a picture of our little wood mouse. She has grown quite a lot since this was taken a week ago. We are planning to release her quite soon as she doesn't need as much milk now. She's eating and drinking independently. We brought back some wild nuts and seeds and leaves for her to look at and have stopped handling her. Just need to build the shelter and job done!

Adorable
what a great thing you have done for her.
Your plans to release her sound excellent. It might be hard to say goodbye, but you are absolutely giving her the best chance at a happy life

Re: Baby mouse not drinking much
Thanks for the messages, this forum has saved her life due to the generosity of those sharing information. I have built the shelter now and just have a couple of questions.
a) Can I move her into the shelter now and just block of the holes until she is released? Maybe it would be too dark?
b) Do I put food in and screw down the lid?
Thank you!

You've done such a wonderful job with this girlie! She is so adorable.
Does the shelter fit inside whatever you have her kept in? I know the page I linked says it should fit inside a 10 gallon. That's what I'd try to do, so she can get used to it without being trapped in it.
Not sure about the food. I'm pretty sure another member has used one of these before, maybe she'll have more advice to offer.
