Got back from the vets...
So I left the vets with -£20 from my pocket and no medicine. We got there and and the lady was very nice, she fell in love with the mice and said that she could hear nothing wrong with their breathing and to wait 10 days to see if it is getting better. If not she said to change things in the tank and maybe bring them back for checkup if they get much worse. The vet said it was likely viral because there breathing/eye/nose discharge was fine. And the clicking from Eclipse (what I described to her) was most probably her being vocal because she was excited. The reason she stated this was because the clicks are short periods of chattering noises rather than clicks in time with her breathing. No antibiotics were given because A.) she thought it wouldn't speed up the healing process and B.) giving the medicine would stress them out and likely make them more ill. I have mixed feelings about this vet visit and hope they don't get worse as I REALLY don't want to waste another 20 quid.

Re: Got back from the vets...
It certainly sucks to have gone to the vet over no big deal, but often you're better safe than sorry. After all, imagine if it really was a URI and you didn't go to the vet, and your mouse ended up dying! Imagine how guilty you'd feel! Take comfort in knowing you did the right thing, even it ended up being over nothing.
Still keep an eye on her though. While her infection may be viral, if a viral infection lasts too long it will usually turn bacterial. If she suddenly gets way worse, take her back in immediately and demand medicine.

Get a different vet. I am shocked that she just shrugged it off as no big deal and assumed that a URI would heal on its own when this is the opposite of true. If you can't trust her to handle something as simple as a URI, you certainly can't trust her to handle something more serious like cancer or internal parasites. I would call her, stress that they are not getting better, and really push to get baytril immediately. Waiting will only make them worse; getting treatment can only help. I'm seriously shocked by the apathy of this vet.

I don't personally see anything wrong with the treatment given. Giving antibiotics for a viral URI won't do anything for it besides kill any bacteria that may get into their system. While some vets might give antibiotics for a situation like this (mine did in the case of Sarah), there are also valid reasons to not give antibiotics in a case like this.CinnamonPearl wrote:Get a different vet. I get upper respiratory infections a lot myself, and this kind of treatment is typical with humans. You always have to wait until it turns bacterial before they'll give you any antibiotics. I don't know if its the same for vets but doctors are taught to give antibiotics as conservatively as possible, because overuse of antibiotics weakens your immune system, helps bacterial strains develop resistance, and limits the effectiveness that antibiotics will have on your system when given in the future. Prescribing antibiotics when they aren't for sure necessary is always a risky move. Additionally, medicating Eclipse if she's not fully tame (I presume she's not considering Lupus hasn't had her mice for terribly long) would probably be highly stressful to her, and considering excessive stress will greatly weaken a mouse's immune system, that would be counterproductive at this point.

That's good to hear. I hope she continues to do well and that there's no need to go back in for meds.

Re: Got back from the vets...
Yeah I hope so too, I have started a diary saying who is sneezing the most on each day and what severity it is. Eclipse is fairly tame, and crawls up my arm and round my neck to the other side, I'm grateful that its nothing really bad but worried it could turn into something worse. What is the likely-hood of it turning bacterial and anything I could do to prevent it? I have heard things about plain probiotic yogurt but i'm unsure whether that would be good right now and the dose amounts.
Also with the recent play session I heard tiny clicks BUT they were coming from Eclipse's mouth? So I don't know if she was bruxing or not.. she was being held at the time. They were so quiet and frequent.

Re: Got back from the vets...
Tiny, fast clicks would be vocalization. The clicks you should be worried about sound a bit like the mouse blowing its nose, if that makes any sense, because what causes it is air being blown through mucus blockage.
If it doesn't get better within about ten days, then it's most likely turned bacterial, even of it's not getting worse. I'd say it's a fifty-fifty chance it gets better or turns bacterial.

Re: Got back from the vets...
I have this video of Bacon being chatty, if it helps. It's not very loud or much of a video but here it is.

Is your mouse acting ok? Does she look healthy? I have a mouse (Holly) that LOVES to talk, especially when I clean the cage and put her in (I'd guess because of excitement). But if your mouse isn't acting healthy she is probably more likely ill.

Is this directed at me? I shared that (old) video to show an example of a perfectly healthy, chatty mouse. Sorry for any confusion.

well if that was directed at me then yes they are active and appear healthy. They have been sneezing for two weeks and three days now. The vet said it was probably viral but i'm worried it could turn bacterial and was asking if I could do anything to help prevent that.

I'm confused lol. I was saying if lupus_corde's mice look healthy then they are probably just chatty, not ill.
lupus_corde, have you ever considered it may be allergies or just a chatty mouse? (I'm just wondering what led you to think they are ill.)

I was confused. I thought you were AnonONIagent posting again, possibly in reply to my video since they had already been talking to lupus_corde just before my post. I just saw "Anon" and didn't pay attention to the rest. Sorry about that.

Lol are we that easy to mix up? I'd hope not; her avatar is of her mouse and my avatar is a Crimson Fist!CallaLily wrote:AnonymousMouseOwner wrote:I'm confused lol.
