Can you have bucks and does?
Ok, so I really would like a buck, but I have 4 girls. What are the chances a buck will smell my girls and want to escape? I am worried about my girls getting pregnant if I decide to get a buck, but really, what are the chances of that happening? Am I just being silly? My girls are in a tank, and the buck would also be in a tank. I can even keep them in separate rooms if needed, is it really that likely anything would happen?

Personally I think that is very unlikely. He will probably smell them in heat, and get a little excited, but that could never cause him to go on full-out escape mode to get all they way into their thank. I think you'll be fine, but you could always keep them in different rooms if you are worried.
I have never really though about that. When I was considering a buck that I had my eye on, his tank would have been just one shelf above the girls if I had chosen to get him at that time.

I would see it as extremely unlikely. Besides, it'd be very difficult for him to escape from the tank and break into your girls tank.

Re: Can you have bucks and does?
When I had Daryl, I also had two groups of girls. So 3 separate tanks lined up on a big built in stand. Daryl was a bit skunky, which may have been from him marking more because of smelling the girls or may have just been him, but that's it. No other problems. If your boy did seem to get extra smelly or territorial or something, you could always move him further away from the girls.
So separate tanks, separate play times and you shouldn't have any trouble.

Re: Can you have bucks and does?
I actually had more trouble with the girls wanting to escape because there were boys near them. My little HoneyBee has always been very tiny, so when she was younger she was able to slip out of a part of a homemade mesh lid. One night I found that she had sneaked out and went to snuggle in Bolt's cage.
Funny now, but I was freaking out then. lol
Anyway. I agree that as long as you keep boys and girls securely separated you should be fine.

No, my only litters were from the moms that I adopted pregnant. Thankfully I caught them before I went to bed so she was only in there for a couple hours. It looked like she had taken over his nest and wouldn't let him in, he was sleeping under the wheel. lol

Lol, abeona, that sounds pretty crazy!
After everyone's responses I decided I would ask my parents, and they said yes! So I should be getting a buck soon! Whenever the right boy comes along and I bring him home, I will definitely post some pictures, but until then, time to start making MES. So excited! I've never had one before!

Re: Can you have bucks and does?
Here's what I have so far for my future boy, any suggestions to improve it? The water bottle isn't in the picture but will be in the cage (obviously). Space is quite limited because I only have a ten gallon available to me, but I am trying to get as much in as I can. I plan to make a few more small MES also.

It's looking great so far, I would add more levels for climbing and you can hang climbing toys too. I think the more climbing stuff the better. Also some cardboard tubes will be fun for him. It's always fun decorating rodent's tanks. Also, each week when I clean the tank, I change things around and add different things just to keep it interesting for him.
