Bin cage questions

Post by River on Fri Aug 26, 2016 10:18 am

So, now that I've decided to make a bin cage and use the 10 gal. For quarantine, I have a question.
Will adding mesh on the sides make escape more likely? Or no?

I've put mesh on walls, but I only used that bin for playtime. I know some tutorials show windows, but I had a boy who began to chew his way through a little hole that I made for his water bottle. Maybe if you do side windows, just keep them higher up so the mice can't comfortably sit there and chew at them when they're bored. lol

My girls finally chewed a hole into the bottom of their bin, too. Make sure you choose one with a flat floor! Razz

I've not made bin cages myself - but ones that I've seen have had the mesh covering a larger area than the actual size of the window (if that makes sense), so if the mouse does chew a bit, they'll just find more mesh.

The bin cage I have my gerbils in, I only put screen on the lid. The screen is on the inside of the lid so there isn't any edge of cut plastic on the inside, the edge is on the outside. I felt his was safer. Hopefully that makes sense, wasn't sure how to describe that. A lot of the YouTube videos I watched on making bin cages, they put the screening on the outside of the cage, which to me makes there more of a chance to chew on the exposed edges.

Do you think a mouse would get cut on the edges of mesh if it was on the inside? That's why I've always put it on the outside. When I have girls in the bin, sometimes I take the lid off and they're all hanging on it upside down... My fingers often catch on it and I wouldn't want it to happen to a mouse. Razz

You can put tape around the edges of the mesh to cover any sharp edges (just watch so the mice don't chew on the tape) or you could fold the edges of the mesh in so there are no sharp edges. Actually what I used instead of mesh was a 20 gallon long tank mesh lid, so there aren't any sharp edges. I just secured the mesh lid onto the lid of the bin. The bin I got was, I believe, 110 quarts. So it's longer and wider than a 20 gallon long tank.

Oh! That's a really creative idea, I'll have to keep it in mind. I fold edges of mesh, but somehow it still gets me. Razz

The bin cage I had I made with my father. There was a side window with the mesh on the outside that was pinned down with nuts, washers, bolts and a metal rail on top. (How do you do pictures on here?) My mouse never escaped, because the mesh and the rail (rim might be a better word) was there. Smile

That sounds nice! I'd love to make a "fancy" one like that. lol

To upload pictures, use the "Host an image" button that's circled in this picture...

When you press it, it'll open up a popup box and ask you to select files. After you choose your pictures, you press the button that says, "Send All," to upload them to the host, and when they're finished uploading, you press "Insert All" to insert them into your message.

Rodents Rock— so do you fold over the edges first and then tape them? I need to find a better way to finish my homemade mesh lid on my "mouse cage", because I hot-glued the tips at first but now that's all worn away and I'm left with pain whenever I open it Laughing I think I tried taping it before, and it didn't work? Not sure if I used actual duct tape though or something else... Like packing tape or something XD

Anna: (chuckles) Do you want me to answer truthfully, or like a lady's maid?
Mary: Let's move on.

I used a metal mesh tank lid, so I didn't have to worry with that, but I think if I were to use mesh I would first try folding the edges over and if the edges were still rough, then I would try the tape. Smile

The bin cage section on this forum has a section on how to make windows safer for mice!
