How to make a hammock?

Post by olimarthemouse on Wed Aug 31, 2016 12:13 pm

Ok, so I finally bought some fleece to make Olimar a hammock! The only thing? I need a tutorial on one! Also, his lid is mesh and not wire/plastic, so the holes are super tiny. How would I hang up a hammock on it?

I've used these free rat patterns to sew mouse sized hammocks. They love the ones with little pockets! http://www.ratropolis.com/Rat%20Tutorials/RatTutorials.htm

You can also just cut a big square and a smaller square and then poke a paperclip through all the corners to hold them together. It's supposed to look like the double decker one in that ratroplis link. Then you can use floral wire to hang it. Easy to remove and the mice can't chew it down! Yay.

I've done ones like corner flat, pocket flat, bunk bed, honeycomb, double decker, and tube from Abeona's link.  Using hot glue because it's easiest for me. They held up really well. Favs so far have been the bunk bed and double decker. They also like the pocket flat some.

Floral wire would be great for small mesh. I've seen some use paper clips or safety pins. My mesh is bigger so I mostly use book rings or sometimes zip ties.

I use safety pins to pin corners together and hang from the top. Safety pins could work, depending on the size of your mesh?

Awesome link by the way abeona! I will certainly draw some inspiration from that Smile I adore the pumpkin shaped thing but I don't think I'm clever enough to attempt that hehe.

Thanks everyone for the info! I made a small no-sew fleece, by cutting strips and tying them together. It turned out ok. But I have a little left over fleece and I think I'll try again. Razz I actually have some floral wire! So that works. But I like the idea of the safety pins, but what if they popped open? I worry over stuff that would probably never happen.

I don't know if you have to worry about them opening or not, but maybe you could find diaper pins? The ones I used with my daughter had a sort of safety cap. lol

Thanks for that link abeona! I attempted a mouse hammock a few days ago and it completely failed. Also good idea with hanging it with paperclips, my lid is mesh too so I think that will actually work!

I saw something pretty cool on Pinterest, it was a hammock for rats, but of course will work for mice too. Very Happy  they used a wooden embroidery hoop and put fleece in it and hung it up! It was pretty cool. I will see if I can find a photo to share.

Darn, I can't find it now. Hopefully I explained it ok. One day I will make one and post a photo. Or maybe someone else has made one like that?

This was all I could find. lol It says ferret, but it is kind of a neat idea!! https://www.laundrybags.com/t-pillowcase_laundry_bag.aspx

Somehow I never noticed the pumpkin and haunted house hammocks/hides on the ratroplis page. I want to try! Bouncy I hear I'll be getting a sewing machine for my birthday, too bad that's 20 days after Halloween. lol

Yes I saw those too when I was looking, cool for ferrets.

On Petdiys.com they refer to the one I saw as a rat swing. It's a really cute idea.

How fun that you are getting a sewing machine!

So, if I used safety pins, do you think I could first add fleece strips to hang it by, and then hook the pins to that?
