Would this cage be suitable for one male mouse?

Post by MooMouse on Thu Sep 01, 2016 5:08 pm

I found this cage on clearance at PetSmart for 7.00, regularly 20.00.

Here are the REAL dimensions, the box lies, what a surprise  Shocked
Base: 14in by 8.5in (35.6cm by 21.6cm).
Bar spacing: 6/16 of an inch (0.95cm)..
Wheel: 5 1/2 in.

I would only be keeping one male mouse in this cage if I were to use it.

Thanks for your opinions! Smile

According to the cage calculator:
Cage calculator wrote:TFM doesn't recommend 5g tanks (or their equivalent
in floor space for any habitat) for long term use by pet caregivers.
A 5g tank is 16 x 8, so yours is even smaller than a 5g tank, which is not recommended.

Bar spacing could possibly be too big as well - definitely too big for a young mouse. Sorry Sad

It's still a great buy though! You could put your mouse in there temporarily while you are cleaning his cage, just make sure the bar spacing is ok according to the size of your mouse to prevent any escaping.

Well that's kind of a bummer. It didn't look that much smaller than Rogue's 10 gallon tank when I first set it up. I bought 2 so I'm definitely going to keep one of them, for the wheel, bowl, and tunnel thing. Thanks for the advice Smile

6/16 = 3/8, right?  So bar spacing is probably ok for an adult mouse. But I agree with others, not enough floor space for a permanent home.  A 10 gallon (20 x 10 inches) is really the minimum. The wheel is too small too.
