new mouse owner with pregnant female!

Post by jess32247 on Mon 19 Sep 2016, 11:21 pm

i just got my very first mice about three days ago and one of the four girls is definitely pregnant. i swear she already looks bigger from day one and im very stressed out about what to do. ive moved her into her own 10g tank with her own wheel, water, food, hidey, and some toys, as per advice from another member (thank you!). is there anything else i can do or leave her be and let nature take its course?

im going to be reading up on the forum about caring for them and what to expect but i would love some advice or reinsurance. if pictures are needed ill be sure to post them. thanks so far for the help everyone!

Did you find the other pregnancy threads in Genetics and Breeding? There's lots of useful info there. You can still work on taming and such if you'd like to, too. It might be a good idea to try offering some scrambled eggs. My pregnant and nursing moms loved them!

My litters were unplanned... the first mom was only here for two days before she gave birth and the second mom was here for a week. They came from someone that never handled them, but they both raised amazing kiddos and turned into wonderful pets. I hope you'll have a good experience, too. And we always love pictures!! Smile

i did find the posts and theyre been very helpful so far! ill cook up a little bit of scrambled egg for her too. Smile

im worried though because she doesnt seem to want to use her hidey house, at the moment shes just plopped next to it sleeping. i bought a new one just for her to use yesterday but i forgot to put some of the old nesting material in it so ill try doing that tonight when the other girls wake up to try to make her more comfortable. i feel like shes going to pop in a few days at the very most so i hope she takes to it. maybe some scrabled eggs in it will entice her to use it i hope!

Your girl might just be more uncomfortable resting outside of the box for now. My second mom didn't build a nest until right before she was ready. Before that, her normal sleeping spot was under the wheel, against the glass, or on top of the nest box. lol

Hehe, right. I always feel kinda bad for pregnant mice. lol It's the black and white one you think is pregnant? How exciting! I wish my litters would have been more marked, I didn't have much variety. Hope you'll share the babies when they come! Ear wiggle

yes, im thinking the black and white one is pregnant! she finally made herself a warm comfy nest by kicking out all the soft bedding i had in her hidey haha. im thinking she should be due anyday now because at this point im not sure how much bigger she can get haha.

I'd agree that she looks pregnant, and is probably due fairly soon. Typically, mice don't show much until they near the end of their pregnancy. Babies are so exciting. Smile
