New mice soon!
So, as I think I've mentioned before, my mouse Honey is currently a lone mouse. I've been struggling to find some mice that are within a reasonable distance to me (I don't drive). I am in contact with a breeder who is going to reserve me a couple of girls, but they're not due to be born for a couple of weeks. So 2 weeks, plus 5 weeks til they can leave their mother, and 3 weeks of quarantine would mean another 10 weeks alone for Honey
As you can imagine I was a bit worried about this and didn't know what to do.
Well it's good news! Today I managed to get in touch with Honey's breeder and he has a 14 week old girl that I can buy
We worked out that Honey is this girl's great-aunt
I read an article ages ago, that I found on TFM forum (mice in the news section) that mice can recognise relatives they've never met before due to scent markers in their urine. So I wonder if these girls will be able to tell that they are family?
So I'm going to buy a mouse on monday, and then get 2 more in about 7 weeks. So watch this space guys, I may have some pictures for you soon.
I usually only keep 3 girls at a time, do you think the social dynamic of keeping a group of 4 will be much different? I'm excited

Re: New mice soon!
I remember reading a while back on the old forum that there can be differences in dynamics with more than three mice. And for whatever reason, they do better in odd numbers. The thing about groups of for is that you could end up with an lone mouse that doesn't fit into a trio. Or you could get two incomplete duos.
I have a group of five ladies, my group gets along really well. I've noticed in my group that there are two duos and my Delilah is the peacekeeper for both of the duos. It's really interesting. Maybe that's why odd numbers work better. I don't know. It's so neat to watch them go about all their important mouse business.

Re: New mice soon!
Thanks guys.
And thanks for the info scaredymouse, that's really interesting. I think my cage is more appropriately sized for 4 mice than 5, so I might still go for 4 and see how it goes. Although I must admit there is a temptation to get 5 now!

How exciting! That really is great news for you and Honey.
I'm pretty sure the minimum sized tank for four girls is 15gal, and for five it's 20gal long. So if you've got one big enough, you could always ask your breeder for three more girls rather than two if you wanted five.

Re: New mice soon!
Thanks CinnamonPearl, can't remember the exact dimensions of my cage right now. I've put it in the cage calculator before and I'm pretty sure it said it was big enough for about 5 and a half mice.
But I'm not sure if the mice would prefer a 5th buddy or would prefer things less crowded? Hmmm...
