Long Nails

Post by stephlisa on Fri Sep 30, 2016 5:03 pm

I've noticed a couple of Colin's nails seem very long - particularly on his back feet. Any suggestions of things I can do to help him wear them down without a vet's visit? I remember reading various things on TFM but I can't recall any of them now!

I think you can use those lava ledges from PetSmart or a different kind of pumice, place it in the cage in strategic spot, and just let him run and climb on it. I remember someone asking if they could use those for their nails on TFM.

You can use a sanitized brick or rock, too.

Sometimes they have rock decorations in the fish section that are pretty rough.

If you put something rough underneath his water bottle, he'll have to climb on it multiple times a day. That should help!

I've had a couple meeple with long nail probs. Nothing I put in their cage to help them ever really worked. I ultimately learned how to trim their nails by hand.

It helps if they are really hand-tame, but if not, you can wrap them in a (dry) washcloth (it constrains the upper body so they can't wriggle free, and you have a better grip). Use bright light and small nail clippers. Depending how compliant the mouse, it may also be a 2-person job. For one of my girls, my sister always had to help me. She held Dotty, and I'd pull out a little paw, splay her fingers or toes and cautiously clip.

I'm just gonna let you know that this is a really old topic now (October 2016...) (Maybe check the dates?)

We just go to the vets when they get unmanageable because they do it for free and they're much better at doing it than me. The main problem is that two of his nails curl in strange ways (it looks quite pretty but is obviously rather inconvenient for a mouse) so its easier to just go and get it sorted there. Not mention that Colin is a favourite at the vets!

Sorry! The topic title just leapt out at me and I totally didn't catch the date.
