Satin or Shiny? Empty Satin or Shiny?

Post by MouseLover Wed 12 Oct 2016, 9:57 am

How can you tell the difference between a really shiny, healthy mouse, and a satin mouse?

Merryweather is a self black mouse, and she's so so shiny. But I'm not sure how to tell if she's a satin, or just very shiny. Usually I don't find it so difficult to tell... maybe it's trickier because she's black?

From the mouse variety page:
General description: Satins have a very silky, soft, dense, and shiny coat. Satin can be harder to see on black mice with an already shiny coat. For black mice, look at the belly of the mouse, as this is where satin will be more apparent.

Hope this helps. Smile

I believe that satins also have white teeth whereas a normal shiny mouse will have the standard yellow teeth.

Ooh, interesting link, CallaLily! I remember reading about teeth color somewhere else, maybe one of TFM's owners old posts or something. Scratch That's a big difference though!

Someone said that satin fur can also be more noticeable around ears and feet. If your mouse has cute little tear tufts. Smile

Whaaat, I never knew the teeth thing, that is crazy! Doubt I'll be able to check her teeth though.

Tried looking at her belly, but she's too excitable and won't stay still. We're still in the process of becoming friends, so don't want to force anything right now.

I'm thinking she is a satin... I've been comparing her to Violet (also self black). Violet is very shiny, but just looks shiny black. Merry's shine almost makes her look greyish at times, almost metallic I suppose.

Also in some of the pictures I've taken, she ends up looking greasy, even though she doesn't look that way in real life Laughing
