My first mouse!
I finally persuaded my parents to let me get a mouse and I got him today! He is mainly black with a few white hairs here and there and I have him in a temporary cage until I can sit out my homemade bin cage and topper. At the minute I have him on a mix of harry hamster, pets at home hamster muesli and also the nuggets by pets at home, burgess dwarf mix and nature's touch hamster food and I have added extra mealworms and sunflowers to get the overall protein content higher for him. Im going to stop rambling now and will try and get pictures of him later

I think the name suits him pretty well so I think I will be sticking with it. I have had him less than 2 hours and his cage stinks so bad and I know males smell but it smells worse than my three hamsters overdue for cage cleanings...

Re: My first mouse!
He may be extra stinky for a little while due to previous poor diet and/or stress. It's usually referred to as "pet shop funk." Though as a male mouse he will always have a stronger odor but once he settles in and with a better diet, it'll probably die down some. I hear using filtered water can help too.
Congrats! I hope you'll share pics soon.

Re: My first mouse!
Okay thank you for the information as I feel like he could have been on a bad diet and also he will definitely be stressed so im hoping then the change of food will be good for him and I will let him settle in. I may try filtered water but only if he continues to smell extremely badCallaLily wrote:He may be extra stinky for a little while due to previous poor diet and/or stress. Hugo is a great mouse name! Almost every animal I've ever owned has had a human name so I'm probably a bit biased

Re: My first mouse!
Hamsters require higher protein than mice. So often thimes, their food has a much higher crude protein content that is suitable for mice. I'm sure, he doesn't need the lab block. Check your bags of food, if you can, and look for something called crude protein. For mice, it should be between 12-14%.
He sounds adorable. Just

Re: My first mouse!
My pet store mice had a horrible funk due to how dirty the cages were. Granted all mine are female but the smell started to go away after being in a clean cage and on better food. Hugo is an adorable name!
