Re: My first mouse!
Ah I wasn't sure whether mice needed more protein or less but I will make a ratio of food that I use for the hamsters and find one that works out at 12-14% protein. I will also take out the blocksscaredymouse wrote:Hamsters require higher protein than mice. So often thimes, their food has a much higher crude protein content that is suitable for mice. I'm sure, he doesn't need the lab block. Check your bags of food, if you can, and look for something called crude protein. For mice, it should be between 12-14%.
He sounds adorable. Just

Granted all mine are female but the smell started to go away after being in a clean cage and on better food. Hugo is an adorable name!

Re: My first mouse!
I'm trying to tame Hugo but he has nipped me once and now every time he comes close to my fingers I flinch which scares him

Wear garden gloves when you handle Hugo until he learns not to nip! Make sure that whenever he nips, you blow on him gently to discourage the behavior. I've had a nipper as well, but gloves combined with blowing straightened him out a lot. But mainly, the solution to nipping is that he has to learn to trust you, that you're not there to hurt him. That's the real key.

And don't hand treat, at least until you get him tamed and the nipping under control. Sometimes that encourages biting.

Best of luck! I know firsthand how intimidating nippy mice can be, but it's best to remember that he's only a mouse. The most he can do to you is draw a little blood. And he'll warm up, don't you worry.

I have just been feeding him some of his food by hand (before I saw your comment) and he doesn't go for my fingers but rather sniffs my fingers then goes for the item in my fingers hwoever I will stop feeding him this way until he is tameCallaLily wrote:And don't hand treat, at least until you get him tamed and the nipping under control. Yeah I know it is kind of silly but the only time any rodent has drawn blood was one of my Syrian's who got confused and nipped and drew one drop of blood but my, my, my it hurt like a motherfudger!CinnamonPearl wrote:Best of luck! Re: My first mouse!
I've never had a mouse draw blood from me, but I've been nipped a few times. Mice are generally a bit gentler than hamsters. I think it's very unlikely that Hugo will properly bite you. Nips are usually either warning signs to back off, or he's not that sure what your fingers are and he's trying to find out.
